Once a UN Volunteer, Always a UN Volunteer: A Story from India 🇮🇳

What if volunteering becomes more than an assignment? What if it becomes a way of life?

For Dr. Mukeshkumar Prajapati, it did.

From serving children in a makeshift hospital after the Bhuj earthquake, to responding to Ebola in Sierra Leone, supporting communities in Cox’s Bazar during COVID-19, and returning to South Sudan, his journey has been shaped by one simple instinct: when people need help, step forward.

Years may have passed since he was a UN Volunteer, but the spirit of volunteering never left him.

At 55, he is still stepping forward.

Together, APCTT and UNV India are relaunching APCTT’s campaign, spotlighting AI innovations supporting climate action across the Asia-Pacific region. This week’s featured innovation: AI-driven site search and selection for energy infrastructure, using satellite data, by Phattharapong Duangkham of Thailand.

RIFFAI is a geospatial intelligence company using AI and satellite data to track environmental change and guide sustainable infrastructure decisions. Its platform assesses land suitability for solar, wind, and data centre projects by analysing environmental, climate, and infrastructure factors, cutting months of manual screening down to days.

“ I got to experience things on the ground, where I could see the FOR WHOM, WHY and HOW of my work.”

For UN Volunteer Asmita Biswas, Data Analyst for U-Report with UNICEF India, a field visit to Nuapada, Odisha, was a chance to see her work beyond the screen.

In collaboration with the Bhubaneswar WASH team, she provided digital and technical support to a programme covering all Gram Panchayats in Nuapada district. She interacted with Anganwadi workers, Swachh Sathi workers and Self-Help Groups, learning about their journey from zero to 50 and their goal of reaching 100.

She also joined tree planting at a six-acre oxygen park and met the District Collector of Nuapada for an insightful discussion on what more could be done.

For Asmita, it was a great experience, bringing her closer to the people, purpose and impact behind her work.
