𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟮𝟱 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁!

ICAR–National Research Centre on Pig, Rani, Guwahati, celebrates its 25th Foundation Day, commemorating 25 years of research, innovation and service to pig farmers and the livestock sector.

Addressing the celebration, Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & Director General, ICAR, appreciated the Centre’s contributions to pig research and emphasised stronger innovation, technology transfer and entrepreneurship, with a vision of making India a leader in pig production.

Dr. Raghavendra Bhatta, DDG (Animal Science), ICAR, stressed translating research into field-level technologies and strengthening researcher–farmer–entrepreneur linkages.

The celebration also honoured progressive farmers and entrepreneurs for their contributions to pig farming, processing, value-added products and enterprise development.

🐖 Landmark Breakthrough in Indigenous Pig Genomics

A major milestone in pig genomics and indigenous breed conservation has been achieved by ICAR–National Research Centre on Pig (ICAR-NRCP), Guwahati, with the generation of the first de novo chromosome-scale whole-genome sequence and functional annotation of India’s indigenous Doom pig.

Native to the Brahmaputra Valley, the Doom pig has long been reared under low-input, semi-scavenging systems and is recognized for its exceptional environmental hardiness and notable tolerance to devastating viral infections, particularly African swine fever.

The landmark genomic study achieved 48× genome coverage, a 2.524 Gb gap-free primary assembly and 99% biological completeness, while identifying 30,299 protein-coding genes.

This comprehensive genetic blueprint will provide a valuable foundation for understanding the Doom pig’s resilience and supporting indigenous biodiversity conservation, disease-resilient breeding, animal health and sustainable livestock development.

A significant step towards unlocking the genetic potential of India’s indigenous livestock resources through advanced genomics.

ICAR–NAARM Marks 50 Years of Shaping Agricultural Leadership

September 1, 2026 | Hyderabad

Celebrating 50 years of excellence, ICAR–National Academy of Agricultural Research Management (ICAR–NAARM) marked its Golden Jubilee Year of Establishment with a renewed commitment to building future-ready agricultural professionals.

Presiding over the celebration, Dr. M. L. Jat, Secretary, DARE & DG, ICAR, urged ICAR–NAARM to champion the agri-food systems approach by bringing together research, education and extension. He called for stronger agricultural leadership and competency-based capacity building across sectors, highlighting their vital role in shaping the pathway towards Viksit Bharat 2047.

Padmabhusan Dr. R. S. Paroda, Former DG, ICAR, called for strengthening capacity in innovation systems, agricultural foresight, digital agriculture and innovation-led entrepreneurship.

Dr. Y. S. Malik, DDG (Education), lauded ICAR–NAARM’s multifaceted contributions and assured wholehearted support for its future endeavours, while Dr. R. M. Sundaram, Director, ICAR–NAARM, highlighted the Academy’s achievements, ongoing initiatives and future pathways
