Demonstration Housing Project at Villianur, Puducherry to Showcase Light Gauge Steel Frame Technology

The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has sanctioned a Demonstration Housing Project (DHP) at Villianur, Puducherry under PMAY-U 2.0, promoting the use of innovative and emerging construction technologies.

A Contract Agreement was signed by BMTPC with M/s Cactus Profiles Pvt Ltd., Noida on 2 June 2026 for the construction of 40 housing units along with associated amenities using Light Gauge Steel Frame (LGSF) Technology with rockwool infill. The project will be utilized as a Working Women Hostel.

An established construction system in countries such as Japan, Australia and North America, LGSF technology uses factory-manufactured galvanized light gauge steel components produced through cold-forming processes. These components are assembled at site into structural panels, creating a steel framework for buildings.

The technology offers several advantages, including longevity, faster construction, structural strength and efficient use of resources, making it a promising solution for sustainable and modern housing development.

The collaboration will also drive thermal comfort for occupants in high-rise buildings reducing peak cooling loads and carbon footprints using cutting-edge materials and passive design.

This will equip the real estate sector with advanced, climate-responsive building systems for speedier, eco-friendly development.

BMTPC was invited to deliver special remarks during the Policy Prototyping Workshop on 'Accelerating the Market Adoption of Green Building Materials – Pathways to Net Zero', organised by Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN) on 14th May 2026 at New Delhi.

The workshop focused on accelerating adoption of green materials and strategies for advancing low carbon and resource efficient building materials in India. Discussion held on developing actionable time bound roadmaps for implementation.

On 12th May 2026, a meeting was held at BMTPC office, New Delhi between Sh. Arvind Kumar, Executive director BMTPC and Dr. Malle’ Fofana, Dy. Executive Director and Head of the Directorate for Green Growth Implementation (DGGI) at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), South Korea along with officials from both sides to discuss the on-going initiatives including BEAT software and SMARTEE-B projects and the future roadmap for collaboration.

The discussion focused on progress achieved so far, upcoming priorities, and opportunities for strengthening coordination. Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to working together towards achieving impactful outcomes.

A technical session to evaluate BEAT (Building Emission Assessment Tool) was organised in BMTPC office on 24th April 2026 by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in association with HEAT International, Germany and CII, India. The session was organised by Chairman, Technical Advisory Committee, ALCBT and Executive Director for technical team of BMTPC to evaluate the BEAT tool.

BEAT is a web-based platform developed by HEAT GmbH under the Asia Low Carbon Buildings Transition (ALCBT) Project, a five-year initiative funded by the Government of Germany (BMWK/IKI) and implemented by GGGI in partnership with ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), EESL, and HEAT International. This Tool calculates carbon emissions throughout a building's entire life cycle.
