Since its inception in 1962, the CSD has functioned as an informal group of social workers and social scientists. An intellectual and social sciences academic hub, this non- partisan study group, worked under the leadership of the legendary freedom fighter, social activist, academician and planner, Dr Durgabhai Deshmukh. In 1964, the CSD became formally affiliated to the India International Centre
and in April 1970 it was registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 with C.D Deshmukh as President and Dr (Smt.) Durgabhai Deshmukh as Executive Chairperson and Honorary Director. In the nearly sixty years of its existence, the CSD has become a reputed institution, recognised for seeking to rectify the lack of focus on social development by India’s policy planners. Through empirical research, by initiating debate and shaping policy, and through forums like the Right to Education and the Social Development Forum, the CSD has increased the engagement of India’s planners and establishment with social development. Each member of the faculty of CSD plays a vital role in underscoring the need for public policy to counter the neglect of the marginalised and the disadvantaged. By doing so, collectively and individually, the faculty continues the legacy of Durgabhai Deshmukh whose emphasis on social welfare and development remains relevant today as it was decades ago.
