Havaldar Bhag Chand from 11th Dogra Regiment, was severely injured in the line of duty while participating in Counter Insurgency Operations (OP Rakshak) in Sunjuwan, Jammu and Kashmir, on 28 June 2003. During the operation, he sustained a bullet injury while courageously fighting against militants, embodying the true spirit of duty and sacrifice.

In recognition of the immense sacrifice made during his service, the injury sustained by Havaldar Bhag Chand in the operation has been officially declared as a 80% Battle Casualty in accordance with para 4 of SAO 8/S/85 and got discharged from the services on 05th July 2024. Service Number 1381414Y Ex-Naik Sathyan MK, was born on May 18, 1964 and enrolled on April 28, 1984. He honorably served in the Indian Army until his retirement on May 31, 2000. During his distinguished service, on September 7, 1996, while serving with the 7th Rashtriya Rifles Battalion in Operation Rakshak, he sustained a gunshot injury to his left shoulder.

This injury, which occurred during a military operation, has been officially recognized as a Battle Casualty with 50% disability and is attributed to his service as per SAO 1/2003/MP.

Serving as the leader of a convoy on a supply mission, he was entrusted with guiding over 20 trucks from a critical supply depot, ensuring vital resources reached troops on the front lines during the Indo-Pak War.

As the convoy made its way through the border area near Moga in Punjab, disaster struck without warning. Out of the clear blue sky, two Pakistani fighter jets swooped down, unleashing a barrage of bombs that hit the convoy with devastating force. The explosions ripped through the trucks, causing widespread destruction and triggering chaos. The heavy bombardment resulted in multiple casualties, and Naik Faramji Variava himself was grievously injured in the attack.

In the chaos that followed, despite his own severe wounds, Naik Variava's indomitable will to lead his men never wavered. He was quickly evacuated to the Moga hospital, where the full extent of his injuries was revealed. His right arm, severely damaged by the blast, was left permanently disabled, with doctors estimating a 70% disability below the elbow.

But this was not the end of his story. His recovery journey took him from Moga to Ambala, Delhi, and finally to Pune, where he received treatment for his injuries. Despite the physical toll, Naik Variava's mental strength and resilience were undeterred. His commitment to his duty and his comrades remained unshaken.

After enduring months of medical care and rehabilitation, Naik Faramji Variava was honorably discharged from the Army on November 30, 1966, after more than three years of service. As he stood on the frontline, he carried not just the weight of his duty but the hopes and dreams of a nation that looked to its soldiers for protection. On March 30, 2000, at precisely 15:00 hours, the tranquility of the moment was shattered as heavy mortar fire erupted from across the border. The chaos of war unfolded before him, and in an instant, everything changed.

In the midst of that relentless barrage, tragedy struck. A mortar shell landed perilously close to his trench, and in that moment, the world seemed to slow down. Anand was severely injured—his left eye damaged, his left foot bearing the scars of battle with an amputation and dislocated ankle. His service took him to the treacherous terrains of Jammu and Kashmir, where he was stationed at the challenging Point 2288 in the Kiran Sector. The harsh conditions and constant threat of conflict were a daily reality, but Subedar Singh faced each challenge with unwavering courage.

April 15, 1994, marked a fateful day that would alter the course of his life forever. While on a routine patrol duty, Subedar Singh’s right foot inadvertently stepped on an anti-personnel mine. The explosion that followed was devastating. In an instant, he found himself amidst a scene of chaos and destruction, with his right foot severely injured. The mine blast left him with no choice but to have his foot amputated.

Despite this harrowing injury, Subedar Kewal Singh’s spirit remained unbroken. His journey from that day forward was one of immense personal struggle and resilience. After enduring months of medical treatment and rehabilitation, he was discharged from the Army on January 31, 2018, with a 60% disability. Yet, his commitment to his family and country remained undiminished.

At home, Subedar Singh is a dedicated father and husband. He is blessed with six daughters and one son. His three eldest daughters are already married, each carrying forward the values instilled in them by their father. The three younger daughters continue to pursue their education with great determination. Two are studying for their Bachelor of Arts degrees, and one is in the midst of a primary teacher training course. His son, too, is following in his footsteps, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Despite the challenges he faced, Subedar Kewal Singh continues to contribute to society. He works on a contract basis as a general caretaker at a Government Primary School, where he applies the same dedication and care to his work as he did in the Army. His wife, a steadfast homemaker, supports the family with grace and strength.

Havaldar Umesh Kumar Baghel was born on July 31, 1981, with a deep-seated passion for serving his country. From a young age, he dreamed of joining the Army, and his ambition was realized when he enlisted on January 09, 2001. His journey took him to the 16 Rashtriya Rifles in 2004, where he became part of a special platoon stationed in Surankot, Jammu & Kashmir.

On the morning of May 30, 2004, while carrying out a critical search operation in Gandi Kassi, the platoon received alarming news of terrorist activity in the area. In the midst of the search, Umesh accidentally stepped on an anti-personnel mine. The explosion that followed was devastating, resulting in the loss of his right leg. Despite this tragic injury, Umesh's bravery and dedication were unwavering.

After enduring numerous surgeries and a gruelling recovery process, Umesh was honorably discharged from the Army on December 31, 2017, under Army Rule 13 (3) III (iii) (a) (i). He was placed in a permanent low medical category due to his disability, which was assessed at 60% for life and was attributed to his military service.

Today, Umesh finds joy and fulfillment in his life with his supportive wife and three children. His two younger children are thriving academically, studying in the 5th and 9th grades, while his eldest is pursuing a B.Tech. ***WOUNDS of HONOR: Naik (TS) Avtar Singh’s Tale of Resilience***
Naik (TS) Avtar Singh, born on March 20, 1980, always felt a deep calling to serve his nation. Answering this call, he joined the Indian Army on September 25, 2000, and was assigned to the 2 DOGRA unit. His dedication took him to the rugged terrains of Baghbala, along the Line of Control in the Tangdhar Sector of District Kupwara.

On November 25, 2006, during Operation Rakshak, Sepoy Balbir Singh and Naik (TS) Avtar Singh were on duty transporting water in a bowzer. As they navigated the treacherous operational track, the vehicle tragically slipped on frozen water and plunged into a nalla near Forward Post Kopra. In an instant, Sepoy Balbir Singh lost his life, while Naik (TS) Avtar Singh was left severely injured.

Avtar Singh suffered a devastating head injury and a severe femur fracture with a through-and-through amputation of his right leg. Despite the grave nature of his injuries, he was swiftly evacuated first to the 168 Military Hospital and then airlifted to the 92 Base Hospital for further treatment.

After enduring years of physical and emotional trauma, Naik (TS) Avtar Singh retired from the Army on September 30, 2019, with a 100% disability. His sacrifice is a poignant reminder of the price of bravery. His valour knew no bounds as he patrolled the treacherous terrains of Vayu post near the LOC in Pakistan.

On that fateful day of 11th December 2010, while leading a patrol from Vayu post to Kanta LP, tragedy struck. A stray mine, hidden along the path he trod with unwavering determination, detonated under his right foot at GR-802420. The blast left Subedar Satnam Singh with a grievous injury to his right heel, resulting in the amputation of his leg below the knee. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, his spirit remained unbroken, a testament to his indomitable will.

Despite the life-altering injury, Subedar Satnam Singh continued to serve with distinction until his retirement from the army on 31st January 2018, his resilience shining through with 75% disability. His pride and joy now rest with his loving family: a son who has completed his B.Com and pursues further studies, and two daughters excelling in their careers in Canada.

Naik Ghadage Sadashiv Dhondiram was born on 26th June 1980, dedicated 17 years of his life to serving in the Indian Army. He commenced his journey on 23rd September 2000, joining the esteemed 19 MARATHA LI unit. His service took him to the challenging terrains of Kupwara, Jammu & Kashmir, where he bravely participated in Counter Terrorist Operations.

On 18th June 2005, during a routine military operation at PP Post (GR-917702), tragedy struck when Naik Ghadage stepped on a (NMM-14) mine, triggering a devastating explosion. The blast severely injured his right leg, necessitating its amputation below the knee. Undeterred by this life-altering injury, NK Ghadage continued to serve in administrative roles within the Army until his honorable retirement on 31st October 2017.

Beyond his distinguished military career, Naik Ghadage is a devoted family man. His wife is an abacus teacher, enriching young minds with mathematical prowess. Together, they nurture a loving family that includes a daughter pursuing a diploma in computer science and a son currently excelling in the 9th grade.
