A milestone for 's biodiversity.

Two Hilsa specimens, with a combined weight of 740 g, have been recorded from , Uttar Pradesh.

Why does this matter?

For decades, the Farakka Barrage severely restricted the upstream migration of Hilsa, a fish that historically travelled as far as Allahabad (now Prayagraj). This new record from Ghazipur is a strong indicator that Hilsa ranching efforts upstream of Farakka are beginning to restore its historic distribution.

Hilsa is an oxygen-demanding migratory fish, thriving only in rivers with healthy flow and good dissolved oxygen levels. Its return to upstream stretches is an encouraging sign of improving river health and the ecological gains being achieved through sustained restoration efforts.

Every sighting is more than just a fish. It's evidence that sustained river restoration and biodiversity conservation can help nature reclaim lost ground.

Gobind Sagar was created after the Bhakra Dam stored the waters of the Sutlej across a vast stretch of land.

50+ Indian Skimmer chicks fledged on the Ganga at Bijnor. Not from a hatchery. Not behind a fence. From open sand, guarded by villagers who chose to protect a bird most of India has never heard of.

The Indian Skimmer is Endangered. Fewer than 3,000 remain. It nests directly on river sandbars. One stray dog, one grazing herd, one careless footstep and the season is over.

So Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS) supported by the National Mission for Clean Ganga tried something different - the Nest Guardians Programme. Local community members were trained to watch nests, keep disturbance out, and track hatching. Result: 50+ chicks in the air.

The lesson isn't about one bird. Conservation works when the people who live beside the river have the willingness to defend it.

मधुबनी के ऑफिसर कॉलोनी क्षेत्र से रेस्क्यू किए गए एक कछुए को सफलतापूर्वक उसके प्राकृतिक आवास में सुरक्षित छोड़ दिया गया।

मानवीय संवेदनशीलता और पर्यावरण संरक्षण के प्रति प्रतिबद्धता का परिचय देते हुए वन विभाग एवं जिला गंगा समिति (नमामि गंगे) के समन्वय से कछुए का सुरक्षित रेस्क्यू किया गया और जीवछ नदी में सुरक्षित पुनर्वासित किया गया।

कछुए जैसे जलीय जीव नदियों की जैव विविधता, जल की गुणवत्ता और पारिस्थितिक संतुलन बनाए रखने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाते हैं। ऐसे जीवों का उनके प्राकृतिक आवास में सुरक्षित पुनर्वास न केवल वन्यजीव संरक्षण की दिशा में एक सराहनीय पहल है, बल्कि प्रकृति के प्रति हमारी सामूहिक जिम्मेदारी का भी प्रतीक है।

आइए, हम सभी जल स्रोतों, वन्यजीवों और जैव विविधता के संरक्षण के प्रति सजग रहें तथा आने वाली पीढ़ियों के लिए एक सुरक्षित और संतुलित पर्यावरण के निर्माण में अपनी भागीदारी सुनिश्चित करें।

गंगा जब प्रयागराज से आगे बढ़ती है और काशी पहुँचने से पहले जिन घाटों को छूती है, वे मिर्ज़ापुर के हैं। विंध्य की पहाड़ियों और गंगा के बीच बसा यह शहर, जहाँ माँ विंध्यवासिनी के दर्शन को हर वर्ष लाखों श्रद्धालु आते हैं, सदियों से इसी धारा के सहारे जीता आया है।

पर दो तीर्थ नगरियों के बीच बसे इस शहर की अपनी चुनौती थी। शहर के अपशिष्ट जल के व्यवस्थित उपचार का कोई आधुनिक ढाँचा नहीं था और गंदा पानी उसी गंगा की ओर बहता था जो आगे काशी के घाटों तक जाती है। संगम से चली निर्मल धारा को काशी तक निर्मल पहुँचाना था, तो बीच की इस कड़ी को मजबूत करना ज़रूरी था।

नमामि गंगे के अंतर्गत मिर्ज़ापुर में 147 करोड़ रुपये के निवेश से यह कड़ी जोड़ी गई। 2022 में निर्माण प्रारंभ हुआ और 2024 में 17 MLD क्षमता का आधुनिक एसटीपी संचालन में आ गया। साथ में 2 किलोमीटर का सीवर एवं इंटरसेप्शन नेटवर्क, जो शहर के अपशिष्ट जल को उपचार तक पहुँचाता है। आज मिर्ज़ापुर का गंदा पानी वैज्ञानिक उपचार के बाद ही आगे बढ़ता है।

एक शहर, एक परियोजना, एक स्पष्ट लक्ष्य। मिर्ज़ापुर की कहानी में आँकड़ों की भरमार नहीं है, पर नदी के लिए इसका अर्थ बड़ा है। गंगा की स्वच्छता एक शृंखला है, और शृंखला उतनी ही मजबूत होती है जितनी उसकी हर कड़ी।

विंध्य की छाया में बसा यह शहर अब गंगा को वैसे ही आगे भेजता है जैसे उसे मिली थी, बहती हुई, निर्मल।

शहर बदला, गंगा बदली। मिर्ज़ापुर।
