NCPCR was set up in March 2007 under the Commission for Protection of Child Rights Act, 2005, an Act of Parliament (December 2005). The Commission's Mandate is to ensure that all Laws, Policies, Programmes, and Administrative Mechanisms are in consonance with the Child Rights perspective as enshrined in the Constitution of India and also the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

In line with Instructions issued by the Hon'ble Home Minister in 10th Apex NCORD meeting held on 26th June, 2026 , NCPCR held a virtual meeting with identified 272 vulnerable districts to review the implementation of Joint Action Plan on Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse among children and illicit trafficking. Dr Sanjeev Sharma, Member Secretary, NCPCR emphasized coordinated action by all stakeholders to protect children from drug abuse and trafficking.
