Sikkim is globally renowned for organic farming. The southern belt of the state, with tropical climate, chiefly produce ginger, turmeric, pulses, corn, maize etc. Along with horticultural produce such as orange, mango and papaya. Salghari is a small village under this belt which is known for best quality ginger as well as other produce such as turmeric, tomatoes, chillies, pulses, and so on. Even though it is considered a dry belt and receives comparatively less rainfall, this impediment has been overcome by the people of Salghari with sheer hard work and dedication they have towards farming. Keeping this strength in mind, the Salghari Multi Purpose Cooperative Society Ltd. conceived an idea of establishing a small scale agro processing plant catering to the farmers of this area, and which will procure, process, grade and market these produces in open market with the brand name of SIKKIM HARVEST. The value addition of these produce yields a better output and provides more bargaining power to the farmers. SIKKIM HARVEST is precisely working to achieve this end. In addition to this, Sikkim Harvest, in line with the vision of the Hon’ble Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, shall endeavour to promote agriculture by ensuring better price to farmers through value addition; and also provide an impetus to rural entrepreneurship which is at the nascent stage at present in Sikkim. This project has been made possible by the generous support from the Cooperation Department, Govt of Sikkim which has been kind enough to believe and support the idea by funding the project through RKVY (Rastriya Krishi Vikash Yozna ) scheme under the Govt of India.
The people entrusted with seeing this venture through are the BOARD OF DIRECTORS of Salghari Multipurpose cooperative society, its administrative staff, the members, concerned departmental officers from the Cooperation Department and all local stakeholders.
