Shree Samartha Vyayam Mandir, Dadar a pioneer Physical Education Institute located at Shivaji Park, in the heart of Mumbai, is working relentlessly in this field for last 92 years. Several thousand future responsible citizens of India have been imparted with basic training in Physical Culture creating mass awareness for the sports in general and striving for competitive excellence in particular.
The institution was founded in 1925 by the late Shri P.L.Kale Guruji in Mumbai where it has two main centers with various activities. Around 3000 thousand students enroll every year and six to seven hundred of these stay on to complete the training that takes four to five years. Several of the students have participated in national and international competitions in various sports and games.
Many children engage themselves every evening on the ground of тАШSheth Mangaldas Verma Kreeda Bhavan' measuring an area of about 1000 sq. mtrs.
The Institution concentrates on indigenous games as well as contemporary sports disciplines like Mallakhamb, Yoga, Gymnastics, Athletics, Judo, Kho-Kho, Volleyball and also exercises like Lezim, Dand-Baithak, Lathi, Lakdi etc.
The Unique feature of this entire training set up is that most of the teachers render their services in an absolutely honorary capacity. The coaches, basically the past students of the Institution, are engaged in producing not only the champions but also the future teachers who will in turn carry on the tradition and keep the motto тАШfor the cause of SportтАЩ alive. The training fees are absolutely nominal i.e. Rs 50/- per month. The Institution is open to all, irrespective of any caste, creed or religion and without any age or s*x bar.
ACHIEVEMENTS :-
The Institution has so far produced more than 1000 National Champions in different sport disciplines and over 30 of them have been conferred тАШShree Shiv Chatrapati State Sports AwardтАЩ by the Govt. of Maharashtra for their excellent sport achievements and 2 coaches are recipient of тАЬUtkrushtha Krida Margadarshak AwardтАЭ. Over 50 students of this Institute have represented the Country in different International sports events. So far about 300 foreign nationals have taken Mallakhamb Training in the Institution and we had taken Mallakhamb Coaching Camps in Japan, U.K., U.S.A., Dubai , Spain , Malaysia, Singapore, Germany etc.
COURSES :-
The Institute conducts two Yoga Centers for adult men and women; runs a Govt. recognized D.Ed. Course as well as a part time unaided Certificate Course in Physical Education тАУ D.P.E. A library on sports and allied publications is also a salient of this Institution.
COACHING CAMP ACTIVITIES :-
The Institution conducts various coaching camps throughout the year in various sport disciplines. The Summer Coaching Camp, in its 43rd consecutive year, is not only unique in its concept but also in its conduction. it is known as the oldest and largest camp in India. Over 2000 participants in varied age group of 5 to 45 years, participate in the 10 days camp, which runs in two sessions тАУ morning and evening 2 hours each. Over 200 coaches in different age groups work voluntarily and impart basically free hand exercise training without apparatus so that participants can continue the same at their residence even after the camp.
Nutritious diet is also offered to all the participants in morning as well as evening sessions. The basic raw abilities such as speed, strength and flexibility as well as psychological abilities such as concentration, perseverance, courage etc. are assessed during the camp. Age wise norms, separate for men and women, pertaining to these abilities have been developed over years of research and experiments. The participants are evaluated according to their individual merits and those qualifying the minimal requirements get priority in admission for the year round training. By inculcating leadership qualities in children and ensuring that the competitive spirit combined with sportsmanship, the overall personality is developed. The ultimate aim is to enhance 'Excellence in Human values for Nation building.'
Shree Samartha Vyayam Mandir, is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950. The provisions of Section - 80G of the Income Tax Act are made applicable to the donations made to the Institution and the donors are exempted from the payment of the Income Tax on the amount donated.
