In a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability and enhancing green cover within the maritime ecosystem, a Bamboo Plantation Inauguration Ceremony was organized as a joint initiative of the Directorate General of Shipping and Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA) on 5th June 2026 at Mumbai Port Authority land.

The programme witnessed the participation of Shri Shyam Jagannathan, I.A.S., Director General of Shipping, reaffirming the maritime administration's commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The initiative was made possible through the generous support of maritime training institutes, shipping companies, industry associations, and stakeholders across the Indian maritime sector.

Aligned with the spirit of World Environment Day and the national campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”, the plantation of bamboo carries special significance. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing and most sustainable plant species, offering multiple environmental benefits:

Rapid carbon absorption and climate change mitigation
Prevention of soil erosion and land degradation
Enhancement of biodiversity and ecological balance
Improvement of air quality and urban green landscapes
Sustainable resource generation with minimal environmental impact

The initiative reflects how collaborative efforts between government organizations, industry stakeholders, and maritime institutions can contribute meaningfully towards building a greener and more resilient future.

As India's maritime sector continues its journey towards growth and modernization, such initiatives reinforce the principle that economic progress and environmental responsibility must advance together.

Every bamboo planted today is a commitment to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable tomorrow.
