Gateway House: Indian Council on Global Relations

A foreign policy think tank to engage India’s leading corporations and individuals in debate and scho

India is poised to play a transformative role in globalisation and world affairs, whilst simultaneously faced with extraordinary problems – terrorism, internal strife, a hostile neighbourhood, poverty and a youthful population with high aspirations. Indian business, with its increasing global footprint, has been leading diplomacy for at least a decade, but neither does not have business nor government leveraged it to India’s advantage. Mumbai is the home to India’s top businesses but lacks a platform to inform and influence foreign policy in New Delhi and around the world. An institute based in Mumbai, the country’s financial centre, will act as that vital intersection between business and foreign policy. Gateway House: Indian Council on Global Relations is a foreign policy think-tank established in 2009, to engage India’s leading corporations and individuals in debate and scholarship on India’s foreign policy and its role in global affairs. Gateway House’s studies programme will be at the heart of the institute’s scholarship, with original research by global and local scholars in geo-economics, geopolitics, foreign policy analysis, bilateral relations, democracy and nation-building, national security, ethnic conflict and terrorism, science, technology and innovation, and energy and environment.

On July 24, 2026, Gateway House held a discussion with Canadian delegates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: the Director General of South Asia, Jean-Christian Brillant; the Deputy High Commissioner of Canada in India, Mark Allen; and the Senior Advisor, Karina Sihota.

The discussion offered insights into India's evolving role in South Asia's economic and strategic landscape. The conversation particularly involved India's deepening engagement with Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, with particular emphasis on infrastructure development and energy cooperation as pillars of regional integration. The discussion also further explored India’s Neighbourhood First Policy and how it tends to increase its footprint in shaping South Asia’s landscape.

The launch of the annual Emerging Middle Powers Report took place in Berlin from July 6-7, 2026.

Partners of the report—Körber Stiftung, Gateway House, the South African Institute of International Affairs, the BRICS Policy Center, and the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia, were leading discussants.

The survey revealed some surprises: that over the years, the middle powers have coalesced around critical issues, and that their participation in a bipolar world is more important than ever.

Based on a survey across India, Germany, Brazil, South Africa, and Indonesia, the report finds that non-alignment has emerged as the preferred response to a fragmenting world order.

Countries are increasingly resisting pressure to choose sides amid an unpredictable U.S., an assertive China, and institutions built for an earlier era.

On 23 June, 2026, Manjeet Kripalani, Executive Director, Gateway House participated in the 12th edition of Primakov Readings, organised by the Primakov National Research Institute of World Economy and International Relations (IMEMO) in Moscow. Leading experts from 20 countries converged to discuss the theme of “World Without Rules: Power Game”.

During the panel discussion titled ‘Global Ramifications of Regional Conflicts’, she articulated her perspectives on the reconfiguration of global connectivity corridors, the rise of new multilateral partnerships, the importance of sovereignty for the Global South, and the growing imperative for nations to invest in emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.

2026 is being called a turning point in artificial intelligence. Not because of one big launch, but because of a fundamental change in what AI does. The world is moving from AI that answers prompts to an AI that would probably replace human workers.

The three big companies in the current AI industry are Anthropic, OpenAI and SpaceX which are gearing up for their initial public offerings; this speeds up the race of AI innovations and India must catch up.
