LONG LIVE THE LEGACY OF ANTI-CASTE WARRIOR AYYANKALI!

On the birth anniversary of Ayyankali, a fierce warrior against caste oppression, the Disha Students’ Organization organised a discussion on his life, struggle, and the relevance of his revolutionary legacy in the present times.

At a time when caste oppression continues to intensify, and ruling forces once again use the question of reservation to fuel caste polarisation while diverting people from their real problems, Ayyankali’s legacy becomes more relevant than ever.

Ayyankali did not confine his struggle to petitions and appeals. He took the struggle to the streets, challenged Brahmanical authority, and showed that the oppressed cannot only resist, but also fight and win. His struggle teaches us two crucial lessons: to believe in the power and initiative of the common masses, and to advance the struggle for liberation through mass movements rather than relying solely on appeals to those in power.

Today, the movement for the annihilation of caste remains trapped in the politics of reformism, pragmatism, and identity politics. The revolutionary legacies of anti-caste warriors like Ayyankali have been deliberately erased from our collective memory, while the ruling establishment has promoted reformist politics that confines the struggle to petitions, electoral calculations, and narrow identity politics.

The discussion explored Ayyankali’s relevance to the present struggle, the ongoing anti-reservation movement, and questions surrounding reservation, identity politics, and pragmatic politics. Many participants shared that they were learning about Ayyankali’s life and struggle in depth for the first time. They also reflected on how we can pave the way forward by building a similar struggle on the ground.

On August 30, 40 people, including students and young people, participated in a trek to the Kondhane Caves, organised by the Disha Students’ Organization (Mumbai). The journey took the participants to one of Maharashtra’s oldest archaeological sites, the Kondhane Caves, whose rock-cut structures date back more than 2,000 years and were created through the labour of artisans, stone masons, woodworkers, and other working people.
Along the trail, participants bonded by helping one another climb the rocky terrain, waiting whenever someone fell behind, and sharing the meals they had brought with them. These simple moments created opportunities for people to share their cultures, experiences, and stories with one another.
After the hour-long trek, participants reached the site of the ancient rock-cut structures. Many spoke about how deeply moved they were by the journey and by the experience of getting closer to nature. Several reflected on how their busy lives in the city had alienated them from nature—a resource and space that should be accessible to everyone.
Building on these experiences, participants spoke about how rejuvenating it was to spend time in nature and how, over time, human beings have become increasingly alienated from it. The discussion also turned towards the urgent need to protect the environment from the destructive forces of the prevailing capitalist system.
One participant spoke about how capitalism has transformed nature and its elements into commodities and resources from which a few can extract profit. Over the last century, capitalist exploitation has caused unprecedented environmental destruction across the world. In India, the increasing handover of natural resources and land to corporate houses such as Adani and Ambani is further depriving ordinary people of their land and access to natural resources.
While descending along the same route towards the base village, participants continued to bond over hot cups of tea. The trek was not merely a journey through the hills; it was an opportunity to discover nature, reflect on life and struggle, and forge bonds of solidarity and unity along the way.
And so, we will continue to take another trek, another journey, another trip—to discover nature, life and struggle, and to forge unity in the process.

शासकीय आदिवासी वसतिगृहांमधील विद्यार्थ्यांचा संघर्ष जिंदाबाद!
समान, मोफत, दर्जेदार शिक्षणाचा अधिकार मिळालाच पाहिजे! सर्वांना रोजगार मिळालाच पाहिजे!
पुण्यासहित राज्यातील अनेक जिल्ह्यांमध्ये शासकीय आदिवासी वसतिगृहांमध्ये राहणाऱ्या विद्यार्थ्यांचे गेल्या १३ दिवसांपासून आंदोलन व आमरण उपोषण सुरू आहे. प्रशासनाच्या नवीन GR च्या विरोधात हे आंदोलन नक्कीच सुरू झाले, पण शिक्षण व रोजगाराच्या अधिकाराशी संबंधित अनेक व्यापक मागण्याही हे आंदोलन सरकारकडे करत आहे. वसतिगृहात राहण्याची वयोमर्यादा, बहुतांश ठिकाणी शहराबाहेर असणारी त्यांची ठिकाणे, आदिवासी आरक्षणातील रिक्त पदे भरणे, त्यात बोगस सर्टिफिकेटद्वारे होणारा भ्रष्टाचार, होस्टेलच्या ठिकाणी योग्य वैद्यकीय उपचारांची सोय असणे या सर्व मूलभूत मुद्द्यांना घेऊन विद्यार्थी संघर्ष करत आहेत. उपोषण करणाऱ्या विद्यार्थ्यांची प्रकृती चिंताजनक स्थितीत असूनही सरकारकडून काहीही सकारात्मक उत्तर आलेले नाही.
या सर्व मागण्यांना जोडून पाहिले तर त्यात सरकारच्या सार्वजनिक शिक्षणातील निर्गुंतवणूक धोरणाचा, म्हणजेच शिक्षणाच्या खाजगीकरण आणि बाजारीकरणाच्या धोरणाचा स्पष्ट विरोध दिसून येतो. दुसरे म्हणजे, जाती आणि आरक्षणाच्या मुद्द्यांना उचलून जनतेमध्ये फूट पाडायचे राजकारण करणाऱ्या भाजपचा वस्तुस्थितीत आरक्षण लागू करण्यात व त्यामध्ये होणाऱ्या भ्रष्टाचाराला रोखण्यात किती उत्साह आहे, ते दिसून येते. त्याचाही विरोध विद्यार्थी करत आहेत.
होस्टेल, मेस, वैद्यकीय सुविधा या कोणत्याही विद्यार्थ्यांचे मूलभूत अधिकार आहेत. यामध्ये खाजगीकरण आणि कंत्राटीकरण करून विद्यार्थ्यांना त्यांच्यापासून वंचित ठेवणे म्हणजेच विद्यार्थ्यांना शिक्षणाच्या अधिकारापासून वंचित ठेवणे आहे. त्यात बहुतांश आदिवासी पार्श्वभूमीतून येणाऱ्या विद्यार्थ्यांसाठी या सुविधा शिक्षण घेण्यासाठीची अटच बनून राहतात.
शिक्षणाच्या खाजगीकरणाचे धोरण नक्कीच काँग्रेस सरकारच्या कारकिर्दीत लागू व्हायला सुरुवात झाली होती. पण आता भाजप ते दुप्पट वेगाने आणि हुकूमशाही पद्धतीने लागू करत आहे. NEP सारखे शैक्षणिक धोरण किंवा NTA सारखे मॉडेल हे शिक्षणात होणाऱ्या खाजगीकरणाचे व बाजारीकरणाचे ब्लूप्रिंट्स आहेत. यातून सत्ताधारी एकच संदेश देऊ इच्छितात: शिक्षण आता अधिकार नाही, तर बाजारात खरेदी-विक्री करता येणारी एक वस्तू आहे आणि भांडवलदारांना शिक्षण वस्तूसारखे विकून त्यातून नफा कमवण्याची पूर्ण मुभा आहे.
दिशा विद्यार्थी संघटना या आंदोलनात शिक्षण व रोजगाराच्या अधिकाराशी संबंधित आणि अस्तित्वात असलेले आरक्षण योग्य पद्धतीने लागू करण्याच्या न्याय्य मागण्यांना समर्थन देत या आंदोलनाला आपले समर्थन जाहीर करते. दिशा विद्यार्थी संघटनेच्या कार्यकर्त्यांनी मांजरी येथील वसतिगृहास भेट देऊन तिथल्या विद्यार्थ्यांशी सविस्तर चर्चाही केली व या आंदोलनाला पाठिंबा घोषित केला.
दिशा विद्यार्थी संघटना ही शिक्षणाच्या बाजारीकरण आणि खाजगीकरणाच्या विरोधात आणि सर्वांना समान, मोफत, दर्जेदार शिक्षणाच्या व सर्वांना रोजगाराच्या अधिकाराच्या संघर्षासाठी प्रतिबद्ध असेल.

व्यंग्यकार हरिशंकर परसाई के जन्मदिवस (22 अगस्त) पर दिशा छात्र संगठन द्वारा किया गया कार्यक्रम

हिन्दी साहित्य के जाने-माने व्यंग्यकार हरिशंकर परसाई के जन्मदिवस पर दिशा छात्र संगठन द्वारा मुम्बई में कार्यक्रम किया गया। आयोजन की शुरुआत उनके जीवन परिचय से की गयी। उसके बाद उनके साहित्यिक रचनाओं पर विस्तार से बात की गयी कि वे किस तरह से अपने लेखन कला के माध्यम से समाज की तमाम विसंगतियों को व्यंग के माध्यम से लिखते थे। उनकी कुछ प्रसिद्ध व्यंग कथाओं जैसे; 'एक गोभक्त से भेंट', 'देव भक्ति', 'जाति' और 'उपदेश' को कुछ साथियों ने प्रस्तुत भी किया।
इसके साथ ही देश की आज की परिस्थितियों पर बात की गयी कि जब महँगाई, बेरोज़गारी, भ्रष्टाचार और साम्प्रदायिकता अपने चरम पर है तो हमें आज के दौर में परसाई जैसे साहित्यकार को ज़रूर याद करना चाहिए। क्योंकि जो उन्होंने अपने दौर में लिखा था वह आज भी प्रासंगिक है, लिहाज़ा परसाई जैसे साहित्यकारों का योगदान आज हमारी विरासत है।
