Following their upcoming recital in Mumbai, violinist 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗴𝗼 and pianist 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶 will bring the same acclaimed programme to Pune the next day. Performing together for over 22 years, the internationally celebrated duo will present an evening of works by Rossini, Beethoven and Respighi, showcasing their exceptional artistry, musical chemistry and virtuosity.

The August meeting of the Italian Book Club in Mumbai will be dedicated to 𝙇𝙖 𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙖 𝙁𝙞𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙖: 𝘼 𝙁𝙞𝙚𝙡𝙙 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙄𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙣 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙 by 𝗕𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗶, an engaging and witty exploration of contemporary Italian culture and identity.

Through personal anecdotes, history and everyday observations, Severgnini examines what 𝘭𝘢 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 𝘧𝘪𝘨𝘶𝘳𝘢, the Italian concept of making a good impression, reveals about the country’s values, habits and way of life. From family and food to fashion, politics, football and public behaviour, the book offers an insightful and often humorous portrait of Italy beyond the familiar stereotypes, inviting readers to reflect on the customs, contradictions and cultural codes that shape Italian society.

The July meeting of the Italian Book Club in Mumbai will be dedicated to 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙧 (1994) by 𝗔𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗶. It is the first novel in the famous series centred on the adventures of Inspector Montalbano.

Set in the fictional town of Vigàta in Sicily, the novel begins with the discovery of the body of a well-known local politician. While the police seek a simple explanation, Inspector Montalbano decides to investigate more deeply, bringing secrets and contradictions to light. With a lively style rich in irony, Camilleri weaves the detective story with a portrait of contemporary Sicilian society, exploring themes such as power, corruption, and the influence of organized crime.

The Italian Cultural Institute in Mumbai, in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation, the Institut Français in India, and the Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, presents 𝙄𝙡 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙖 (1970), by 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 𝗕𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗼𝗹𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗶, one of the most defining works of Italian political cinema. This special screening is part of Reel Europa, a quarterly showcase of the best of restored classic cinema from Italy, France and Germany.

The film follows Marcello Clerici, a man desperate to lead an ordinary life and escape the traumas of the past. In his quest for normalcy, he embraces the Fascist regime and accepts a mission to assist in the assassination of his former professor, an anti-fascist dissident living in Paris.

Join us to witness the film’s extraordinary visual style, with the masterful cinematography of Vittorio Storaro and the exploration of conformism and fascism.

Spend an evening with the 𝗦𝗢𝗜 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗢𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮, conducted by 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗼, the Principal Conductor at the Deutsches Nationaltheater und Staatskapelle Weimar and Music Director of VoceAllOpera and 𝗔𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗼, winner of the Second and Zarzuela Prizes in Operalia 2024.

The programme brings together Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 7 and a selection of much-loved Italian songs by Gastoldon, Brogi, Di Lazzaro, Denza, Innocenzi, Verdi and Rossini, showcasing the passion, lyricism and charm of the Italian vocal tradition to Mumbai.

This month at the Italian Book in Mumbai.📖

Join us this June as we read Canto 5 and 33 from 𝕯𝖆𝖓𝖙𝖊’𝖘 𝕯𝖎𝖛𝖎𝖓𝖊 𝕮𝖔𝖒𝖊𝖉𝖞: 𝕴𝖓𝖋𝖊𝖗𝖓𝖔 – two famous episodes that showcase Dante’s extraordinary ability to give voice to the damned and to transform their suffering into immortal poetry.

Through Dante’s journey across the circles of Hell, Inferno explores universal themes such as guilt, justice, desire, and moral responsibility. In 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗩 we encounter 𝗣𝗮𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗮, symbols of a passionate and forbidden love whose story continues to evoke compassion and raise questions about the relationship between passion and sin. One week ago, Aperitivo Italiano featuring Ida Altrove brought a taste of Italy to Mumbai through an evening of Italian Jazz and Soul.
