All India Kisan Sabha (अखिल भारतीय किसान सभा; AIKS), is the largest national organisation representing peasants in India. The AIKS, which was formed at its first conference on April 11, 1936 at Lucknow, has a glorious 85-year history. It played a stellar role in arousing the peasantry against British imperialism in the movement for national freedom. It was able to unite various sections of the pea

santry in the struggle against feudalism, big traders and monopolists. The AIKS led historic peasant struggles in Telangana in Andhra Pradesh, Tebhaga in West Bengal, Punnapra-Vayalar and North Malabar in Kerala, Surma Valley in Assam and tribal movements in Tripura and Maharashtra. In the period after independence, it has continued to organise peasants against the anti-peasant policies of the government. These policies have acquired a particularly disastrous nature during the last three decades of neo-liberalism, leading to suicides of over 4 lakh debt-ridden peasants in the last 25 years. The strong peasant movement built by the AIKS has contributed to the formation of the Left-led state governments in West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura. The AIKS believes that a powerful agrarian movement has to be built on alternative policies centred on the interests of the poor peasants and agricultural workers, both of whom constitute the overwhelming majority of the Indian peasantry. The AIKS is clear that only a thoroughgoing agrarian revolution can truly solve the deep and growing crisis in Indian agriculture.

Autobiography of Legendary Bihar Leader Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi released on his 103rd Birth Anniversary

The autobiography of the legendary CPI(M) and AIKS leader from Bihar, Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, was released on 1 September 2026, his 103rd birth anniversary, by CPI(M) Polit Bureau member and AIKS National President Dr Ashok Dhawale at the CPI(M) state office hall in Patna. The autobiography in Hindi, titled "Marxism: My Struggle Path" was edited by his departed comrade Siddheshwar Nath Pandey and Ganeshda's daughter Mrunalini.

The elegant function was presided over by CPI(M) Bihar state secretary and Central Committee member Lalan Choudhari. All leaders paid floral tributes to Ganeshda's portrait. CPI(M) State Secretariat member Ajay Kumar, MLA, welcomed all the guests with shawls and flowers. All members of the CPI(M) Bihar state secretariat, Party members and Left sympathisers, and Ganeshda's family members were present.

Those who addressed the function and hailed Ganeshda's 96-year-old life and work were Dr Ashok Dhawale, Lalan Choudhari, Mrunalini, Vijay Mishra (CPI), K D Yadav (CPI-ML), Alok Mehta, ex-MP (RJD), Balgovind Bind (VIP), CPI(M) Central Committee member Awadhesh Kumar, and senior CPI(M) leader Sarvodaya Sharma.

Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi was born in a landlord family in the Nawada district of Bihar on 1 September 1924. He joined the Quit India movement and the undivided CPI at the age of 18 in 1942. He was a freedom fighter who spent over six years in jail, both before and after independence.

Influenced by the legendary peasant leader Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, Ganeshda, despite his landlord class origin, fought for the interests agricultural workers and poor peasants all his life, and became one of the top leaders of the AIKS in Bihar.

In 1964, Ganeshda joined the CPI(M). He was in the forefront of the struggle against the Emergency from 1975-77. In 1977 and 1980, he was twice elected as MLA, and from 1990 to 1996 he served one term as MLC.

In 1980 he was elected as the Bihar state secretary of the CPI(M), and was constantly re-elected to this post for 25 years till 2005. He was elected to the CPI(M) Central Committee for nearly three decades. His simple lifestyle and personal integrity was beyond dispute, and this made him a highly respected figure across the entire political spectrum. He remained active till the end, and passed away at the age of 96 on 11 January 2021.

His autobiography chronicles his long and illustrious life, and is undoubtedly a valuable addition to the history of the Communist movement in Bihar.

Mutilation of FRA in Letter and Spirit: AIKS Protests Evictions from Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve

Stop Illegal Evictions in Meghamalai-Varusanadu: AIKS Demands Strict Implementation of FRA

The colonial and anti-democratic legacy of the Indian state in the realm of forest governance is unfolding in all its ugliness through the ongoing attempts to evict traditional forest dwellers from 5,072.653 hectares of land in the Meghamalai-Varusanadu areas—part of the Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve (ABR)—in Theni district of Tamil Nadu. Around 25,000 people, most of them marginal peasants, spread across 9 village panchayats in Theni district, are facing eviction from this vast terrain. The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) is of the firm opinion that this is a clear case of systemic, deliberate violation of the law by the state. Branding peasants as "encroachers", the Tamil Nadu forest department is deploying every dirty trick in the book to evict toiling peasants from this terrain. The fact that the major chunk of the affected peasants belongs to Adivasis, Dalits and Most Backward Classes is a mirror of the brutal forest governance regime implemented by the Indian ruling classes.

These communities clearly meet the FRA's definition of "traditional forest dwellers," with historical records proving their habitation and cultivation predating the forest declarations. The reality is that revenue records, Zamin records, historical maps, and census material of the contested terrain clearly demonstrate that people were already living and farming in this area before it was subsequently declared a Reserve Forest and Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest bureaucracy's blatant lawlessness and contempt for legal procedures have resulted in the mutilation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA) in letter and spirit. It is to be reiterated that the FRA prohibits the eviction or removal of forest dwellers "from forest land under their occupation till the recognition and verification procedure is complete." The Tamil Nadu forest bureaucracy — hand in glove with the elite conservation industry — has a notorious track record in violating FRA and manipulating other laws when it comes to the suppression of Adivasis and other traditional forest dwellers.

The forest bureaucracy's vindictive disregard for the law of the land and the larger political economy of the forest resources—favouring global finance and corporates while simultaneously opposing the toiling masses—is the root cause of the eviction attempts that are happening in the areas surrounding Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve as well as in the Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. The executive has scant respect for the Gram Sabha, a statutory authority under the FRA. It is also important to note the gross violation of the FRA as well as the Wildlife Protection Act (WLPA) in the establishment of Tiger Reserves in India.

What is most disturbing is that in several cases related to the FRA and the WLPA, a section of the judiciary is eager to whitewash and justify serious violations of the law and excesses committed by the forest bureaucracy. Constitutional experts and activists have pointed out certain instances of such behaviour by the Hon'ble Madras High Court in relation to forest cases in general and this case in particular. The esteemed higher courts should be guided by constitutional morality and not by the colonial legacy of forest governance. The AIKS reiterates that it is a patriotic duty to prevent the sabotage of the FRA, for any violation of the Act will directly create a conducive atmosphere for crony capitalists to loot natural resources.

The AIKS further demands that the Tamil Nadu government take concrete steps to implement the FRA in this region and that the Supreme Court uphold the FRA in its true spirit. The AIKS therefore calls upon all democratic sections to strengthen the FRA and resist illegal evictions of the toiling masses from the forest areas.

इतिहास में ऐसे समय आते हैं जब जो काम दशकों में नहीं हो पाता वह कुछ दिनों में हो जाता है । पिछ्ले कुछ दिन और सप्ताह इस बात की ताईद करने वाले दिन और सप्ताह थे । इनमे जो हुआ है वह सचमुच असाधारण, अदभुत और असामान्य है । ज्यादातर लोगों के लिए अप्रत्याशित, अचानक और अनपेक्षित भी है । मगर ऐसा कहना इसलिए ठीक नहीं है क्योंकि सब्र की भी एक सीमा होती है, मुगालते की भी एक उम्र होती है और बर्दाश्त करने की भी एक हद होती है । यही हुआ भी : दरिया झूम के उट्ठे और इस कदर उट्ठे कि बड़े जतन से ढाली गयी ढालों से भी नहीं टाले जा सके ।
