About CSIR-NBRI

The CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI) – is amongst one of the constituent research institutes of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi. Originally set up as the National Botanic Gardens (NBG) by the State Government of Uttar Pradesh (U.P.), it was taken over by the CSIR in 1953. Though, initially engaged in research in the classical botanical disciplines, the NBG went on laying an increasing emphasis, in keeping with the national needs and priorities in the field of plant sciences, on its applied and developmental research activities. A time came when it was felt that the name NBG no longer projected the correct nature and extent of its aims and objectives, functions and R & D activities. Consequently, the NBG was renamed as the NBRI, i.e., The National Botanical Research Institute in 1978. This name has since correctly reflected the distinctive character and the R & D activities of this applied botanical institution only of its type in the country. R & D Areas and Infrastructure
The aims and objectives of the Institute are pursued through various projects distributed among the following six broad areas of R & D supported by S&T support services for their respective activities:

1. Pharmacognosy, Phytochemistry and Product Development
3. Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
5. Plant Genetic Resources and Improvement
6. Botanical Garden, Plant Conservation and Agro-technologies

Objectives

Basic and applied research on plant diversity and prospection, plant-environment interaction and biotechnological approaches for plant improvement. Development of technologies for new plant and microbial sources of commercial importance
Building up germplasm repository of plants of indigenous and exotic origin, including rare, endangered and threatened species
Providing expertise and assistance for identification, supply and exchange of plants and propagules, garden layout and landscaping
Dissemination of scientific knowledge and technologies on plants and microbial resources through publications, training, capacity building and extension activities

🌿 A Fragrant Addition to Lucknow! 🌸

Hon’ble Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the 'Lala Lajpat Rai Fragrance Park' at Lajpat Nagar, opposite the Clock Tower at Hussainabagh, Lucknow.
The park has been developed by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) in collaboration with CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI), Lucknow. As part of the horticultural development, CSIR-NBRI planted 108 species of fragrant plants, climbers, shrubs and trees across the park. The landscaping has been designed with multilayered hedges and shrubs to harmonize the park with the surrounding urban landscape and create an aesthetically pleasing green space.
The park is the 2nd Fragrance Park in the country, the other being the Garden of Fragrance in Chandigarh.

✨ Key attractions incorpotaed by CSIR-NBRI in the park include:

🌺 A Touch & Smell Garden featuring 40 species
⠿ Braille signages for an inclusive visitor experience
🌸 Throughout the year fragrant experience with fragrant flowers

Awareness Programme on POSH Act | CSIR-NBRI

CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow organised an Awareness Programme on “Empowerment of Women – Measures under POSH Act” on 27 August 2026 at the Training Hall, Maharishi Parashar Bioresource Centre, Banthara Campus.

The programme focused on creating awareness about the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act, promoting a safe, respectful, inclusive and dignified workplace, and empowering employees with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.

The programme featured insightful sessions by Dr. Vidhu A. Sane, Scientist ‘G’, CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow and Dr. Seema Shukla, Department of Science, Charak Institute of Education, Lucknow.

Training Programme on Lotus Cultivation 🌸

CSIR-NBRI, Lucknow organised a one-day Training Programme on “Lotus Cultivation” on 24 August 2026 at the Botanic Garden.

The programme brought together 33 participants—farmers, entrepreneurs, students and plant enthusiasts—from Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Haryana and Bihar.

Participants gained hands-on experience in lotus cultivation, propagation and management, along with practical insights into cultivating India’s National Flower. 🇮🇳🌸

CSIR–NBRI, Lucknow organized a week-long Skill Development Training Programme on “Commercial Floriculture” from 17th–21st August 2026 under CSIR integrated skill initiatives Phase-III. A total of 12 (Male-04 and Female-08) candidates from different states of India, including UP, Jharkhand, J&K, Assam, Odisha and Maharashtra have participated in the programme and gained hands-on experience in different techniques is commercial floriculture. Also, all the participants visited a floriculture cluster developed under floriculture activities at Bakshi ka Talab and a friends rosery in Lucknow.
