What Is SIR 2002?
SIR means Special Intensive Revision of the Voter List (Matdata Suchi) — done by the Election Commission of India.
In short:
It’s a special checking process to make sure every voter’s name, age, and address in the voter list is correct and updated.
Why “2002”?
In the year 2002, the Election Commission had made a major revision of voter lists all over India.
That list from 2002 is still used as a base record — because it was one of the most accurate, verified lists made after house-to-house checking.
So when we say SIR 2002, we mean:
“The voter revision process using the verified 2002 voter list as a reference.”
Main Purpose of SIR 2002
1. To clean and update voter lists
o Remove names of people who have died or moved away
o Add names of new voters (18+ years old)
o Correct wrong names, addresses, photos, etc.
2. To prevent fake or duplicate voters
o Using 2002 data helps identify who are genuine residents/voters.
3. To make election rolls transparent and fair
o Every genuine citizen gets their voting right.
o No one can misuse fake voter IDs.
What It Means for You (The Voter)
If your name — or your parents’ name — was already in the 2002 voter list, then:
You don’t have to show many documents again during new SIR verification.
You’ll be easily verified by officials.
Your name will stay in the new voter list without problems.
But if your name was not there in 2002 (for example, you are a new voter, or your family shifted recently), then:
You need to show proper proof of identity and address, like:
• Aadhaar card
• Electricity bill / house tax
• School certificate / age proof
How the Process Works (Step by Step)
1. Booth Level Officer (BLO) visits houses to verify details.
2. He checks if the person’s or their family’s name existed in the 2002 voter roll.
3. If yes → verified easily.
If not → documents needed.
4. Updated data sent to Election Office.
5. Final voter list published after public checking.
Why It’s Happening Again Now
The Election Commission is running SIR 2025 (Special Intensive Revision 2025) to prepare for future Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
That’s why “SIR 2002” is mentioned everywhere — it’s the base year used for cross-checking.
