CALICUT - the commercial hub of Malabar region and the head quarters of Kozhikode District. Historically important city once ruled by the Zamorins of Malabar. Trade with the Arabs was routed through the city in yesteryears. Agriculture, trade and fishing were the major activities of the citizens. Now the scenario has been changed in tune with the total spatial developmental initiatives taken place
. During the recent past, agricultural activities dwindled, major traditional commercial activities decentralized and fishing related activities modernized. Tourism and IT related ventures registered a spurt in growth, real estate business flourished, infrastructure developments including air port, hospitals, apartments, ware houses, educational institutions etc. Kozhikode, alias Calicut is steadily and systematically pacing towards attaining the status of a metro city. DEVELOPMENT - The very word kindles hope for a brighter future. Every citizen, especially city dwellers always look for development. Developmental aspirations find no boundary. Advancement of science and technology facilitate seamless developments in every field. Inventions and achievements are the products of ambitions. The city of Calicut also thrives for planned developments and the citizens eagerly wait for the facilities such development brings in. The basic factor of all such developmental activities is planning, which essentially denotes Spatial Planning or Town Planning. The aspect of Planning invariably involves availability of resources and its scientific and optimum usage for the betterment of the community. Such a need entails a special authority, which could supplement, co-ordinate and execute planned development of a city and its suburbs in a scientific, comprehensive and professional way, as a single urban agglomeration, which is presently being carried out by local self governments as one of their statutory responsibilities
AUTHORITY– Constituted under the Town Planning Act for the planned development of the city and its suburbs. The Governing body of the Authority has an Executive Committee and a General Council. The members nominated by the State Government include Hon. members of Parliament and Legislative Assembly, Hon. Mayor of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation, Presidents of Grama Panchayats, State Level Officers of various Government Departments and Establishments, members of the organizations of Commerce & Industry, besides the Secretary of the Authority. Calicut Development Authority has well experienced technical and ministerial staff consisting of Town Planners, Engineers and Administrators Officers to support the planning & development activities of the Authority.
