ഇന്ത്യൻ ഉപഭൂഖണ്ഡത്തിലെമ്പാടും കാണുന്ന വലിപ്പമേറിയ ഒരു ഇലകൊഴിയും വൃക്ഷമാണ് അരയാൽ. പീപ്പലം എന്നു കൂടി ഇതിന് പേരുണ്ട്. ഹിന്ദു, ബുദ്ധ മതങ്ങൾ പവിത്രമായി കരുതുന്ന വൃക്ഷമാണിത്. ഈ മതങ്ങളുടെ ആവിർഭാവത്തിനുമുന്നേ തന്നെ മരങ്ങളെ ആരാധിച്ചിരുന്നു എന്നതിന് ഹാരപ്പയിൽ നിന്നും മറ്റും തെളിവ് ലഭിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
