We at Aarna Earth believe that when it comes to SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT in a city or town, there is a need to adopt a "holistic approach" and there is no "one stop" solution for all the issues of waste management in a city or town.

It is our view that the approach to waste management needs to be a a combination of approaches and waste management solutions. The primary objective needs to be the effective and efficient disposal of waste using -

- a centralized approach,
- a "hub and spook" approach and
- an "at source" approach

Centralized Waste Management is the most common and popular approach. This is what most Municipalities are doing today - wherein the waste of the city or town is collected and taken to a centralized dumping ground where it simply dumped in an open ground or scientific disposed off in landfills. This is an approach wherein the Municipal Corporation is expected to give "service" for waste management and its disposal to the citizens of the city or town.

"A hub and spook" approach to waste management is to create multiple "hooks" where waste can be brought in from the "spooks" and the processed of the waste is at the "hook" site itself rather than taking it to the Centralized Dumping Yard.

The third approach is - process the waste "at source" itself. This is a relatively NEW approach that involves creating waste management and disposal infrastructure at the source of the waste origin itself. This approach would be very successfully deployed for Biomedical Waste Disposal during pandemic times like Covid.

Whilst the above is true, each approach has its pros and cons and each approach would also have its own supporters, it is important to build and deploy a Municipal Waste Management Program that has solutions using ALL the THREE (03) approaches to waste management.

14/06/2021

Solid Waste Management (SWM) is one among the basic essential services provided by municipal authorities in the country to keep urban centres clean. However, almost all municipal authorities deposit solid waste at a dumpyard within or outside the city haphazardly.

With rapid urbanization, the country is facing massive waste management challenge. Over 377 million urban people live in 7,935 towns and cities and generate 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per annum. Only 43 million tonnes (MT) of the waste is collected, 11.9 MT is treated and 31 MT is dumped in landfill sites.

For "SWACCCH BHARAT MISSION" to be really successful, India needs to have a solution for Municipal Waste Management in Landfills...
