The Hornbill Festival is a wonderful assembly of various types of Naga communities, displaying their great cultural traditions and heritage in this week-long celebration. To encourage the inter-tribal interaction and to promote the cultural heritage of Nagaland, the Government of Nagaland and art & culture department, organizes this Hornbill Festival every year in the first week of December.
During this festival, almost all Naga communities partake to showcase their reach cultural heritage and olden traditions. The main event takes place in the heritage village of Kisama (almost 12 km. from Kohima, the capital of Nagaland). The festival is named after the Indian hornbill, the large and colourful forest bird which is displayed in the folklore of most of this state's tribes. The aim of the festival is to revive and protect the rich culture of Nagaland and display its extravaganza and traditions.
The Hornbill Festival is a vibrant blend of dances, performances, crafts, games, sports, food fairs and religious ceremonies. Traditional arts are also displayed with paintings, wood carvings and sculptures by modern Naga artists. Naga troupes sing folk songs, perform traditional dances and play indigenous games and sports, though the main attraction is the beautiful NIGHT CARNIVAL and THE INTERNATIONAL ROCK CONCERT.
You can add on some more items in this visit. Take a day and visit to the 700 years old village Khonoma. This is a green village and it gains the title of KHONOMA NATURE CONSERVATION AND TROGOPAN SANCTUARY. This village have some fascinating history, 3 ancient forts and abundant natural beauty.
