প্রতি বছর ৩রা মে 'ওয়ার্ল্ড লেপার্ড ডে' বা বিশ্ব চিতাবাঘ দিবস পালিত হয়। এটি একটি অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ দিন, যার মূল লক্ষ্য হলো চিতা-বাঘের সংরক্ষণ নিয়ে মানুষের মধ্যে সচেতনতা বাড়ানো। চিতাবাঘ বাঘ বিশ্বের অন্যতম অভিযোজনক্ষম এবং বিস্তৃত অঞ্চলে ছড়িয়ে থাকা একটি বন্যপ্রাণী। ঘন জঙ্গল থেকে শুরু করে পাহাড়ি এলাকা, এমনকি লোকালয়ের কাছাকাছি পরিবেশেও এরা মানিয়ে নিতে পারে। কিন্তু এত সহ্যক্ষমতা থাকা সত্ত্বেও, আবাসন ধ্বংস, শিকার এবং মানুষের সাথে সংঘাতের কারণে আজ তারা চরম সংকটে। এই দিবসটি পালনের মূল উদ্দেশ্যই হলো বিশ্বজুড়ে এদের রক্ষায় সচেতনতা ও প্রচেষ্টা বাড়ানো।

Earth Day

In the year 2009, The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 22nd April as International Mother Earth Day through a resolution. The Day recognizes the Earth and its ecosystems as humanity's common home and the need to protect her to enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity.

The alarming causes that can affect the livelihood on Mother Earth are:
1. Climate change,
2. Detoriorating Biodiversity.

Man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet.

So, Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action - a need to shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Protecting the planet is everyone's responsibility. Environmental progress on Earth is built through everyday action, from communities to ecosystem to innovators advancing solution. Clean air, fresh water and climate resilience are not luxury, they are necessities and basic needs for living beings. This year Earth Day invites everyone around the globe to unite behind renewable energy and to triple the global generation of clean electricity by 2030. By joining everyone on Earth Day we should encourage all to take action, educate, advocate and mobilize

The theme for Earth Day 2026 is OUR POWER, OUR PLANET, focusing on empowering individuals and communities to take measurable steps to sustain the Earth with its ecologically balanced environment. Observing Earth Day also include amelioration of the renewable energy transition process and resilience of climate change.

Therefore we need to recover our ecosystems. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part to follow this.
For this International Earth Day, we should remind ourselves - more than ever - that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Thus we should promote harmony with nature and the Earth.

২০০৯ সালে জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদ একটি প্রস্তাবের মাধ্যমে ২২শে এপ্রিলকে আন্তর্জাতিক ধরিত্রী দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়। এই দিনটি পৃথিবী এবং ইহার বাস্তুসংস্থানকে মানব সভ্যতার আঁতুড়ঘর হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি দেয়। এই দিনটি পালনের প্রধান উদ্দেশ্য হল মানুষের জীবনযাত্রার মান উন্নয়ন, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন মোকাবিলা এবং জীববৈচিত্র্যের বিলুপ্তি রোধ করতে পৃথিবীকে রক্ষা করার প্রয়োজনীয়তা।
পৃথিবীতে একটি সুস্থ সবল জীবনধারণের ক্ষেত্রে যেসব প্রতিকূলতা প্রভাব ফেলতে পারে, সেগুলো হলো:

২. জীববৈচিত্র্যের অবনতি
প্রকৃতির ওপর মানুষের বিভিন্ন বেহিসেবি এবং বেআইনি কার্যকলাপ প্রকৃতির ভারসাম্যকে বিনষ্ট করে এবং জীববৈচিত্র্যকে ব্যাহত করে। বিভিন্ন ধরণের কার্যকলাপ যেমন, বনভূমি ধ্বংস, ভূমির অপব্যবহার, যথেচ্ছভাবে কৃত কৃষিকাজ ও গবাদি পশুপালন অথবা ক্রমবর্ধমান অবৈধ বন্যপ্রাণী পাচারের ব্যবসা— এই বিশ্বের ধ্বংসের ব্যবস্থাকে ত্বরান্বিত করে।
তাই, ধরিত্রীমাতা যখন স্পষ্টভাবে আমাদের সতর্ক হওয়ার আহ্বান জানাচ্ছেন — আমাদের এমন একটি স্থিতিশীল অর্থনীতির দিকে এগিয়ে যাওয়া প্রয়োজন যা পৃথিবী এবং মানবজাতি উভয়ের জন্যই অনুকূল হবে। পৃথিবীকে রক্ষা করা আমাদের প্রত্যেকের কর্তব্য। একটি সমষ্টিগত সাধারণ পদক্ষেপ থেকে শুরু করে উদ্ভাবকদের উন্নতমানের সমাধান—সবকিছুর মাধ্যমেই পরিবেশগত অগ্রগতি গড়ে ওঠে। নির্মল বাতাস, বিশুদ্ধ জল এবং স্থিতিশীল জলবায়ু কোনো বিলাস বহুল জীবনযাত্রার অংশ নয়,বরং প্রতিটি জীবের বেঁচে থাকার মৌলিক চাহিদা। ধরিত্রী দিবস ২০২৬, সমাজের সকল শ্রেণীর মানুষকে নবায়নযোগ্য শক্তির উৎপাদনকে সক্রিয় করতে এবং ২০৩০ সালের মধ্যে বিশ্বজুড়ে স্বচ্ছ বিদ্যুৎ উৎপাদন তিনগুণ করার আহ্বান জানাচ্ছে। ধরিত্রী দিবসে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হওয়ার মাধ্যমে আমাদের উচিত সকলকে পদক্ষেপ নিতে, শিক্ষিত করতে, জনমত গড়তে এবং একত্রিত হতে উৎসাহিত করা।

তাই আমাদের বাস্তুসংস্থানকে পুনরুদ্ধার করা জরুরি। বাস্তুসংস্থান পৃথিবীর সমস্ত প্রাণকে বাসের উপযুক্ত করে তোলে। আমাদের বাস্তুসংস্থান যত সুস্থ থাকবে, পৃথিবী এবং তার মানুষ ততটাই সুস্থভাবে জীবন যাপন করতে পারবে। বাস্তুসংস্থান পুনরুদ্ধার করলে দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন, জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন মোকাবিলা এবং প্রজাতির গণবিলুপ্তি রোধে সহায়তা হবে। কিন্তু আমরা তখনই সফল হব যখন সবাই এতে অংশ নেবে।
এই আন্তর্জাতিক ধরিত্রী দিবসে আমাদের নিজেদের আরও একবার স্মরণ করিয়ে দেওয়া উচিত—আমাদের এমন একটি সুস্থ অর্থনীতির দিকে অগ্রসর হওয়া প্রয়োজন যা মানুষ এবং ধরিত্রী উভয়ের কল্যাণ করবে। এভাবেই আমাদের প্রকৃতি ও পৃথিবীর সাথে প্রত্যেকের সামঞ্জস্য বজায় রাখা উচিত।

World Aquatic Animal Day, observed annually on April 3rd, is a dedicated global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of aquatic animals to our societies and ecosystems. While often overshadowed by land-based conservation efforts, this day highlights the immense diversity of life beneath the water - ranging from majestic whales and coral reefs to often-overlooked invertebrates and microscopic organisms.
Since 2020, every April 3rd has been celebrated as World Aquatic Animal Day. The theme for 2026, is "Unseen, Unprotected & Underwater: Perspectives on Aquatic Animals". This day focuses on raising awareness about the overlooked, under-researched, and often unprotected species in marine and freshwater ecosystems, highlighting the need for better conservation and welfare, particularly regarding human impact. Aquatic animals not only from the ocean, but also from rivers and lakes are celebrated and recognized for their essential roles in the planet’s health.
These creatures ranging from fish, mammals, invertebrates, etc. all play an important role in maintaining the marine food web and ecosystems. Furthermore, they are also vital for ecosystem health, support biodiversity, and hold cultural and social significance to local communities.
However, aquatic animals are increasingly at risk due to human activities, such as overfishing, pollution, and the destruction of their natural habitats. This day serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect these animals and their environments and to address the mounting threats these creatures face, including :
Plastic Pollution: Millions of tons of debris enter the oceans annually, harming marine life through ingestion and entanglement. One hundred million marine animals die each year from plastic waste alone.
Climate Change: Rising water temperatures and ocean acidification disrupt breeding patterns and destroy vital habitats like mangroves.
Overexploitation: Unsustainable fishing practices and the wildlife trade threaten the survival of numerous species.
Aquatic animals are very important for ecosystems constituted of any kind of water body. However, human consumption of aquatic animal products is greater than ever before and it is even expected to increase. In order to meet this demand, humans breed aquatic animals in aquacultures. This increases the risk of aquatic animal diseases and a threat to the sustainable growth of aquaculture. Diseases can be caused by different factors, for example climate change, unsustainable farming practices or unregulated trade. Moreover, diseases can affect our food supply and threaten the safety of consuming aquatic animals. Therefore, aquatic animal production needs to be regulated while being mindful of the concern of animals’ welfare. Production practices need to be improved, with regard to their sustainability. This will help in conserving biodiversity and protecting the environment.

WOAH Aquatic Animal Health Service:
The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) is working to improve aquatic animal health worldwide. The need to build more sustainable aquatic animal production systems is imminent. Therefore, the WOAH launched its first Aquatic Animal Health Strategy in May 2021. The objectives of the strategy are very ambitious and include securing income and livelihood for 50 million people working in fisheries and aquaculture, contributing to food security, and protecting aquatic animal resources for a sustainable development.
By protecting aquatic animals and conserving the oceans and other waterways, we can ensure a healthy life on earth since we depend on it for various reasons, including temperature and nutrient pattern regulation, food supply and climate.
By fostering education and advocating for stronger legal protections, World Aquatic Animal Day encourages individuals and policymakers alike to transition toward more sustainable interactions with our water systems. Protecting these animals is not just an act of kindness; it is essential for maintaining the biological balance of the planet and ensuring the food security and livelihoods of billions of people.

প্রতি বছর ৩রা এপ্রিল বিশ্ব জলজ প্রাণী দিবস পালন করা হয়। এটি হলো একটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ বিশ্বব্যাপী উদ্যোগ, যার লক্ষ্য আমাদের সমাজ ও বাস্তুতন্ত্রে জলজ প্রাণীদের গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করা। স্থলভাগের সংরক্ষণের জন্য অনেক সময় এটি অবহেলিত থেকে গেলেও, এই দিনটি জলজ জীবনের বিশাল বৈচিত্র্যকে তুলে ধরে—বিশালকায় তিমি এবং প্রবাল প্রাচীর থেকে শুরু করে সম্পূর্ণরূপে পরিচিত নয় এমন অমেরুদণ্ডী প্রাণী এবং আণুবীক্ষণিক জীব পর্যন্ত।
২০২০ সাল থেকে প্রতি বছর ৩রা এপ্রিল এই দিবসটি পালিত হয়ে আসছে। এটি সমুদ্র ছাড়াও নদী ও হ্রদের জলজ প্রাণীদের জলাশয়ের সামঞ্জস্য রক্ষায় তাদের অপরিহার্য ভূমিকার জন্য স্বীকৃতি দেয়। মাছ, স্তন্যপায়ী এবং অমেরুদণ্ডী প্রাণীরা সামুদ্রিক খাদ্যশৃঙ্খল ও বাস্তুতন্ত্রের ভারসাম্য রক্ষায় গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা পালন করে। এছাড়া তারা জীববৈচিত্র্য রক্ষা এবং স্থানীয় সম্প্রদায়ের সাংস্কৃতিক ও সামাজিক ক্ষেত্রেও বিশেষ গুরুত্ব বহন করে।
বর্তমান সংকট ও চ্যালেঞ্জসমূহঃ
মানুষের বিভিন্ন কর্মকাণ্ড যেমন—অতিরিক্ত মাছ ধরা, দূষণ এবং প্রাকৃতিক আবাসস্থল ধ্বংসের কারণে জলজ প্রাণীরা আজ চরম বিপদের সম্মুখীন হয়েছে। জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, মহাসাগরের অম্লীকরণ এবং প্লাস্টিক দূষণ তাদের অস্তিত্বের জন্য একটি বড় সংকট।

এই দিবসটি নিম্নলিখিত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রতিকূলতাসমুহের মোকাবিলায় একটি প্ল্যাটফর্ম হিসেবে কাজ করে:
প্লাস্টিক দূষণ: প্রতি বছর লক্ষ লক্ষ টন বর্জ্য সমুদ্রে প্রবেশ করে, যা প্রাণীদের প্লাস্টিক গ্রহণ বা তাতে আটকে পড়ার মাধ্যমে ক্ষতিসাধন করে। শুধু প্লাস্টিক বর্জ্যের কারণেই প্রতি বছর প্রায় ১০ কোটি সামুদ্রিক প্রাণী মারা যায়।
জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন: জলের তাপমাত্রা বৃদ্ধি এবং অম্লীকরণ প্রজনন পদ্ধতিকে ব্যাহত করে এবং ম্যানগ্রোভের মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ আবাসস্থল ধ্বংস করে।
অতি-আহরণ: অনিয়ন্ত্রিতভাবে মাছ ধরা এবং বন্যপ্রাণী বাণিজ্য অসংখ্য প্রজাতির টিকে থাকাকে হুমকির মুখে ফেলেছে।
জলজ চাষ (অ্যাকুয়াকালচার) ও স্থায়ীত্বঃ
বর্তমানে জলজ প্রাণিজ পণ্যের চাহিদা আগের চেয়ে অনেক বেশি এবং এটি আরও বাড়বে বলে আশা করা হচ্ছে। এই চাহিদা মেটাতে মানুষ অ্যাকুয়াকালচার বা জলজ চাষের ওপর নির্ভর করছে। তবে অনিয়ন্ত্রিত চাষাবাদের ফলে মাছের রোগবালাই বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে, যা বিশ্বব্যাপী খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা ও স্থায়িত্বের জন্য বিপজ্জনক। তাই জলজ প্রাণীর উৎপাদন নিয়ন্ত্রণ এবং তাদের কল্যাণের দিকে নজর দেওয়া অত্যন্ত জরুরি। উন্নত ও উপযুক্ত জলজ প্রাণীর চাষ পদ্ধতি একদিকে যেমন জলজ প্রাণীপালকদের সহায়তা করবে, অন্যদিকে জীববৈচিত্র্য ও পরিবেশ রক্ষা করবে।

বিশ্ব প্রাণী স্বাস্থ্য সংস্থা (WOAH) বিশ্বজুড়ে জলজ প্রাণীর স্বাস্থ্য উন্নয়নে কাজ করছে। ২০২১ সালের মে মাসে তারা প্রথমবারের মতো 'জলজ প্রাণীর স্বাস্থ্য কৌশল' (Aquatic Animal Health Strategy) চালু করে। তাদের লক্ষ্য হলো মৎস্য ও জলজ চাষে নিযুক্ত ৫ কোটি মানুষের জীবিকা নিশ্চিত করা এবং প্রয়োজনীয় উন্নয়নের জন্য জলজ সম্পদ রক্ষা করা।

International Day of Zero Waste

The United Nations observes the International Day of Zero Waste every year on 30 March to encourage responsible waste management and sustainable consumption across the world. On 14 December 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its seventy-seventh session to proclaim 30 March as International Day of Zero Waste, to be observed annually. Türkiye, with 105 other countries, put forward the resolution, following other high-level decisions focused on pollution, such as the UN Environment Assembly resolution “End plastic pollution: towards an internationally legally binding instrument.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) jointly facilitate the observance of International Day of Zero Waste.
As part of this campaign, Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, civil society, the private sector, academia, women, youth and other stakeholders are invited to engage in activities aimed at raising awareness of national, subnational, regional and local zero-waste initiatives and their contribution to achieving sustainable development.
Promoting zero-waste initiatives through this international day can help advance all the goals and targets in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including Sustainable Development Goal 11 and Sustainable Development Goal 12. These goals address all forms of waste, including food loss and waste, natural resource extraction and electronic waste.
On this day, governments, educational institutions, civil society organisations, and communities organize awareness campaigns, workshops, seminars, clean-up drives, and sustainable lifestyle initiatives. Schools and universities hold discussions on waste reduction, while businesses introduce policies that promote circular economy practices such as recycling, composting, and reuse of materials. Communities also participate in activities such as composting food waste, reducing plastic usage, and promoting sustainable food systems.
The celebration encourages people worldwide to rethink their consumption habits and adopt zero-waste principles like reduce, reuse, recycle, and recover resources. These practices aim to minimize waste throughout the life cycle of products—from production to disposal.
Every year, humanity generates between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste. Some 2.7 billion people lack access to waste collection, 2 billion of whom live in rural areas. Waste pollution significantly threatens well-being, economic prosperity, and accelerates the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution. Without urgent action, annual municipal solid waste generation will hit 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050.
Millions worldwide observed the inaugural International Day of Zero Waste in 2023, raising awareness of national, subnational, regional, and local zero-waste initiatives and their contribution to achieving sustainable development. Zero-waste approaches can foster sound waste management and minimize and prevent waste generation.
This year’s observance focuses on food waste, a critical yet preventable driver of environmental harm. The world is wasting food at an alarming scale, undermining food security and slowing progress toward a zero-waste, circular future. In 2022 alone, approximately 1 billion tonnes of food, nearly one-fifth of all food available to consumers, was wasted.
Food loss and waste represent a major climate and environmental threat. They account for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, nearly five times the emissions from the aviation sector, and up to 14 per cent of global methane emissions. Tackling food waste is among the most cost-effective and readily achievable climate solutions, aligned with zero-waste approaches that prioritize prevention, resource efficiency and systemic change.
Governments, businesses, and individuals must embrace zero waste to overcome the waste pollution crisis. UNEP and UN-Habitat call on stakeholders – including governments, civil society, businesses, academia, communities, women and youth – to participate in national, subnational, regional and local zero-waste initiatives.
Educational institutions play an important role by promoting environmental awareness among young people. Waste segregation, composting programmes, and plastic-free campaigns in schools and colleges can significantly reduce waste generation and encourage sustainable habits among students.

আন্তর্জাতিক বর্জ্য দিবস

বিশ্বজুড়ে দায়িত্বশীলভাবে বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা করা এবং ভোগব্যবস্থাকে উৎসাহিত করার উদ্দেশ্যে জাতিসংঘের দ্বারা প্রতি বছর ৩০ মার্চ আন্তর্জাতিক শূন্য বর্জ্য দিবস পালন করা হয় । ২০২২ সালের ১৪ ডিসেম্বর জাতিসংঘ ৭৭তম অধিবেশনে একটি প্রস্তাব গ্রহণ করে ৩০ মার্চকে আন্তর্জাতিক শূন্য বর্জ্য দিবস হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়। এই প্রস্তাবটি উত্থাপন করেছিল তুর্কি এবং এর সঙ্গে আরও ১০৫টি দেশ তার সমর্থন জানায়। দূষণ কমানোর লক্ষ্যে জাতিসংঘ পরিবেশ পরিষদের “প্লাস্টিক দূষণ বন্ধ করার জন্য আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে বাধ্যতামূলক আইন তৈরির উদ্যোগ”–এর মতো গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সিদ্ধান্তের ধারাবাহিকতায় এই পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া হয়। জাতিসংঘ পরিবেশ কর্মসূচি এবং জাতিসংঘ জনবসতি কর্মসূচি এই দিবসের আয়োজন ও পরিচালনার দায়িত্ব যৌথভাবে পালন করে।
এই উদ্যোগের অংশ হিসেবে জাতিসংঘের সদস্য রাষ্ট্র, বিভিন্ন আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থা, নাগরিক সমাজ, বেসরকারি প্রতিষ্ঠান, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান, নারী ও যুবসমাজসহ বিভিন্ন অংশীজনকে আহ্বান জানানো হয় যাতে তারা জাতীয়, আঞ্চলিক ও স্থানীয় পর্যায়ে শূন্য বর্জ্য উদ্যোগ সম্পর্কে সচেতনতা বাড়াতে বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচিতে অংশগ্রহণ করে। এর মাধ্যমে সামগ্রিক উন্নয়নের লক্ষ্যে এগিয়ে যাওয়া সম্ভব।
এই আন্তর্জাতিক দিবসটির পালনের মাধ্যমে শূন্য বর্জ্য উদ্যোগকে শক্তিশালী করলে ২০৩০ সালের উন্নয়ন কর্মসূচি বাস্তবায়নে বড় ভূমিকা রাখা যাবে। বিশেষ করে উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্য ১১ (মজবুত শহর ও জনপদ) এবং উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্য ১২ (দায়িত্বশীল ভোগ ও উৎপাদন) অর্জনে এটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এসব লক্ষে খাদ্য অপচয়, প্রাকৃতিক সম্পদের অতিরিক্ত ব্যবহার এবং ইলেকট্রনিক বর্জ্যসহ সব ধরনের বর্জ্য সমস্যার সমাধানের ওপর গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়।
এই দিনে বিভিন্ন সরকার, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান, সামাজিক সংগঠন এবং স্থানীয় সম্প্রদায় সচেতনতা প্রচার, কর্মশালা, সেমিনার, পরিচ্ছন্নতা অভিযান এবং স্থিতিশীল জীবনযাপন নিয়ে নানা কর্মসূচি করা হয়। স্কুল ও বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলোতে বর্জ্য কমানোর গুরুত্ব নিয়ে আলোচনা হয়। ব্যবসায়িক প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলো পুনর্ব্যবহার, কম্পোস্ট তৈরি এবং উপকরণের পুনঃব্যবহারের মতো চক্রাকার অর্থনীতি ভিত্তিক নীতি গ্রহণ করা হয়।
এই উদযাপন মানুষকে তাদের ভোগের অভ্যাস নতুন করে ভাবতে এবং শূন্য বর্জ্যের মূল নীতিগুলো যেমন, ব্যবহার কমানো, পুনঃব্যবহার, পুনঃচক্রায়ন এবং সম্পদ পুনরুদ্ধার অনুসরণ করতে উৎসাহিত করে। এর উদ্দেশ্য হলো উৎপাদন থেকে ব্যবহার এবং শেষ পর্যন্ত বর্জনের পুরো প্রক্রিয়ায় বর্জ্যের পরিমাণ যতটা সম্ভব কমিয়ে আনা।
বর্তমানে পৃথিবীতে প্রতি বছর প্রায় ২.১ থেকে ২.৩ বিলিয়ন টন পৌর কঠিন বর্জ্য তৈরি হয়। বিশ্বের প্রায় ২.৭ বিলিয়ন মানুষ নিয়মিত বর্জ্য সংগ্রহের সুবিধা পায় না, যার মধ্যে প্রায় ২ বিলিয়ন মানুষ গ্রামীণ এলাকায় বসবাস করে। বর্জ্য দূষণ মানুষের স্বাস্থ্য, অর্থনৈতিক উন্নতি এবং সামগ্রিক কল্যাণের জন্য বড় সমস্যা হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছে। পাশাপাশি এটি জলবায়ু পরিবর্তন, প্রকৃতি ও জীববৈচিত্র্যের ক্ষয় এবং দূষণের মতো বৈশ্বিক সংকটকে আরও তীব্র করে তুলছে। যদি দ্রুত কার্যকর ব্যবস্থা না নেওয়া হয়, তাহলে ২০৫০ সালের মধ্যে বছরে উৎপন্ন পৌর বর্জ্যের পরিমাণ ৩.৮ বিলিয়ন টনে পৌঁছাতে পারে।
২০২৩ সালে প্রথমবারের মতো আন্তর্জাতিক শূন্য বর্জ্য দিবস উদযাপন করা হয় এবং বিশ্বজুড়ে লক্ষ লক্ষ মানুষ এতে অংশ নেয়। এর মাধ্যমে বিভিন্ন দেশ ও অঞ্চলে নেওয়া শূন্য বর্জ্য উদ্যোগ সম্পর্কে সচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি পায় এবং সার্বিক উন্নয়নের ক্ষেত্রে এসব উদ্যোগের গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরা হয়। শূন্য বর্জ্য পদ্ধতি সঠিক বর্জ্য ব্যবস্থাপনা নিশ্চিত করতে এবং বর্জ্য উৎপাদন কমাতে বা প্রতিরোধ করতে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা রাখে।
এ বছরে এই দিবসের মূল গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়েছে খাদ্য অপচয় রোধে। খাদ্য অপচয় পরিবেশের জন্য বড় একটি সমস্যা, যদিও এটি অনেকটাই প্রতিরোধ করা সম্ভব। বর্তমানে বিশ্বজুড়ে বিপুল পরিমাণ খাদ্য নষ্ট হচ্ছে, যার ফলে খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা দুর্বল হয়ে পড়ছে এবং শূন্য বর্জ্য ও চক্রাকার অর্থনীতি গড়ে তোলার অগ্রগতি ধীর হয়ে যাচ্ছে। শুধু ২০২২ সালেই প্রায় ১ বিলিয়ন টন খাদ্য অপচয় হয়েছে, যা ভোক্তাদের জন্য উপলব্ধ মোট খাদ্যের প্রায় এক-পঞ্চমাংশ।
খাদ্যের অপচয় ও ক্ষতি জলবায়ু এবং পরিবেশের জন্য বড় বিপদ। এটি বৈশ্বিক গ্রিনহাউস গ্যাস নিঃসরণের প্রায় ১০ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত দায়ী, যা বিমান চলাচল খাতের নিঃসরণের তুলনায় প্রায় পাঁচ গুণ বেশি। পাশাপাশি এটি বৈশ্বিক মিথেন গ্যাস নিঃসরণের প্রায় ১৪ শতাংশ পর্যন্ত অবদান রাখে। তাই খাদ্য অপচয় কমানো জলবায়ু পরিবর্তনের মোকাবিলায় সবচেয়ে কার্যকর এবং সহজলভ্য সমাধানগুলোর একটি।
বর্জ্য দূষণের এই সংকট মোকাবিলা করতে সরকার, ব্যবসা প্রতিষ্ঠান এবং সাধারণ মানুষ—সবারই শূন্য বর্জ্যের ধারণাকে গ্রহণ করা জরুরি। UNEP এবং UN-Habitat সরকার, নাগরিক সমাজ, ব্যবসা প্রতিষ্ঠান, শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠান, বিভিন্ন সম্প্রদায়, নারী ও যুবসমাজসহ সব অংশীজনকে জাতীয় ও স্থানীয় পর্যায়ে শূন্য বর্জ্য উদ্যোগে অংশ নেওয়ার আহ্বান জানিয়েছে।
পরিবেশ সচেতনতা তৈরিতে শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানের ভূমিকা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। স্কুল ও কলেজে বর্জ্য আলাদা করা, কম্পোস্টিং কর্মসূচি চালু করা এবং প্লাস্টিকমুক্ত ক্যাম্পেইন পরিচালনা করলে বর্জ্য অনেকটাই কমানো সম্ভব এবং শিক্ষার্থীদের মধ্যেও অপচয় না করার অভ্যাস গড়ে ওঠে।
শূন্য বর্জ্যের নীতি পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মতো অঞ্চলের জন্য বিশেষভাবে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, যেখানে দ্রুত নগরায়ন ও জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির কারণে বর্জ্যের পরিমাণ বেড়েছে। কলকাতার মতো শহরগুলোতে প্রতিদিন বিপুল পরিমাণ পৌর বর্জ্য তৈরি হয়। খাদ্য বর্জ্য ও প্লাস্টিক ঠিকভাবে না ফেললে পরিবেশ দূষণ, জলদূষণ এবং বিভিন্ন রোগ তৈরি হতে পারে।
সামগ্রিকভাবে বলা যায়, পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মতো অঞ্চলে শূন্য বর্জ্য উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করলে পরিবেশ দূষণ অনেকটাই কমানো সম্ভব এবং একই সঙ্গে উন্নত নগর ও গ্রামীণ উন্নয়ন নিশ্চিত করা যাবে। সরকার, প্রতিষ্ঠান, ব্যবসা এবং সাধারণ মানুষের সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টায় একটি পরিচ্ছন্ন ও উন্নত ভবিষ্যৎ গড়ে তোলা সম্ভব।

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS’ 2026

In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly established March 21st as the International Day of Forests (IDF) to highlight the vital role all forests play in our ecosystem. Since its inception, this day has evolved into a global movement, prompting nations to launch tree-planting initiatives and educational campaigns. Each year, local and international efforts unite to advocate for forest conservation and deepen public appreciation for these essential natural resources.
“Forests and economies” is the theme of the 2026 International Day of Forests, celebrating the essential roles of forests in driving economic prosperity. These roles go well beyond income and jobs from forest production and the trade of renewable raw materials and foods; forests also sustain family and community agriculture, enhance agricultural productivity, and safeguard healthy watersheds. The theme was chosen by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests to highlight the intersection of sustainable development goals with economic growth.

With many countries seeking to move toward a sustainable bioeconomy, forest products offer nature-based solutions as replacements for carbon-intensive materials while generating new economic opportunities.

Focus areas for 2026 :
Sustainable Economic Value: Beyond timber, forests support agriculture, provide non-wood products, and act as "economic infrastructure" for rural communities.
Bioeconomy Solutions: The theme highlights how forest-based products can replace carbon-intensive materials, such as plastics and steel.

Forests are indispensable for healthy economies – today and for future generations. They are fundamental to sustainable and inclusive economies. They underpin livelihoods, generate employment, reduce poverty and strengthen food systems for billions of people worldwide. For many rural and forest-dependent communities, forests are a primary source of income, nutrition, energy and resilience, particularly in terms of economic or environmental stress.
Beyond jobs and livelihoods, forests function as economic infrastructure. They provide essential ecosystem services — including climate regulation, water security, soil protection and disaster risk reduction — that support productivity across agriculture, energy, industry and urban systems. These contributions help sustain economic growth while safeguarding natural capital for present and future generations.
Yet, despite their full range of economic, social and environmental contributions, forests remain widely undervalued in economic decision-making and chronically underfinanced. Current levels of investment fall far short of what is needed to halt deforestation and forest degradation and to unlock forests’ full potential for sustainable development.
On the International Day of Forests, we highlight the need to better recognise forests as engines of inclusive growth and well-being, and to scale up policies, partnerships and investments that place forests at the heart of resilient and sustainable economies.

আন্তর্জাতিক অরণ্য দিবস: ২০২৬

২০১২ সালে জাতিসংঘ সাধারণ পরিষদ ২১শে মার্চকে আন্তর্জাতিক অরণ্য দিবস (IDF) হিসেবে ঘোষণা করে। এই দিবসটির মূল লক্ষ্য হলো সব ধরনের বনের গুরুত্ব অনুভব করা এবং এ বিষয়ে জনসচেতনতা বৃদ্ধি করা। প্রতি বছর এই দিনে বিভিন্ন দেশ স্থানীয়, জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক পর্যায়ে বৃক্ষরোপণ অভিযান এবং বনের প্রয়োজনীয়তা তুলে ধরার মতো নানা কর্মসূচি পালন করে। সময়ের সাথে সাথে এটি বিশ্বব্যাপী এক আন্দোলনের রূপ নিয়েছে, যেখানে বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ বন সংরক্ষণের ওপর বিশেষ গুরুত্ব আরোপ করে।
'বন ও অর্থনীতি' (Forests and Economies) হলো ২০২৬ সালের আন্তর্জাতিক অরণ্য দিবসের মূল লক্ষ্য। অর্থনৈতিক সমৃদ্ধি অর্জনে বনের অপরিহার্য ভূমিকাকে তুলে ধরাই এ বছরের লক্ষ্য। বনের এই ভূমিকা কেবল আয় বা বনজ সম্পদ উৎপাদনের কর্মসংস্থানের মধ্যেই সীমাবদ্ধ নয়; বন ব্যক্তিগত সমষ্টিগত কৃষিকে টিকিয়ে রাখে, কৃষি উৎপাদনশীলতা বৃদ্ধি করে এবং মিষ্টি জলের উৎসগুলো রক্ষা করে। দীর্ঘস্থায়ী উন্নয়ন লক্ষ্যমাত্রার সাথে অর্থনৈতিক সেতুবন্ধন তুলে ধরার জন্য 'কোলাবোরেটিভ পার্টনারশিপ অন ফরেস্টস' (অরণ্য সম্বন্ধীয় সহযোগিতামূলক অংশীদারিত্ব ) এই প্রতিপাদ্যটি নির্বাচন করেছে।
বর্তমানে অনেক দেশ যখন একটি দীর্ঘস্থায়ী জৈব-অর্থনীতির (Bioeconomy) দিকে এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে, তখন বনজ সম্পদ প্লাস্টিক বা ইস্পাতের মতো কৃত্তিম উপকরণের বিকল্প হিসেবে প্রাকৃতিক সমাধান দিচ্ছে এবং নতুন অর্থনৈতিক সুযোগ তৈরি করছে।

২০২৬ সালের প্রধান লক্ষ্যসমূহ:
দীর্ঘস্থায়ী অর্থনৈতিক মূল্য: কাঠের বাইরেও বন কৃষিকাজে সহায়তা করে, কাঠ নয় এমন বনজ দ্রব্য সরবরাহ করে এবং গ্রামীণ সম্প্রদায়ের জন্য একটি "অর্থনৈতিক পরিকাঠামো" হিসেবে কাজ করে।

বিশ্বব্যাপী উদ্যোগ: ‘ইউএনইসিই’ (UNECE) একটি "Grown by Nature" শীর্ষক সার্বিক অনলাইন প্রদর্শনী আয়োজন করছে, যা কাষ্ঠজাত বিপ্লবের গুরুত্ব তুলে ধরবে।
সুস্থ অর্থনীতির জন্য—আজকের এবং আগামী প্রজন্মের জন্য—অরণ্য অপরিহার্য। বন হলো স্থায়ী এবং অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক অর্থনীতির মূল ভিত্তি। এটি বিশ্বজুড়ে কোটি কোটি মানুষের জীবিকা নির্বাহে সহায়তা করে, কর্মসংস্থান সৃষ্টি করে, দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন করে এবং খাদ্য ব্যবস্থাকে শক্তিশালী করে। বিশেষ করে অর্থনৈতিক বা পরিবেশগত সংকটের সময়ে গ্রামীণ ও অরণ্য-নির্ভর জনগোষ্ঠীর জন্য বন হলো আয়, পুষ্টি এবং টিকে থাকার প্রধান উৎস।
