Pangi Forest Division, Chamba (Himachal Pradesh, India) with the support under GoI-UNDP-GEF SECURE Himalaya Project is striving towards transforming Pangi Forest Division into “SMART Foresters’ Division”.
SMART: SECURE Mandate Assisting Rapid Technology
Divisional Forest Officer - Pangi cm Member Secretary, LLPMC-Pangi Sh. Sushil Kumar Guleria said, “On the closing ceremony of First ever Snow Festival of Pangi, Pangi Forest Division feels proud to announce that We have become one of the first Forest Divisions (Territorial) in Himachal Pradesh state equipped with advanced technological support such as Smart Sticks, Fox Lights, Aniders, Body Cam, Forensic Kits, Wireless Communication System, Deep Search Metal Detectors, Body Safety Suit, Patrolling Kits etc. provided under various components through ongoing SECURE Himalaya Project.” He further added that this technological support provided under the SECURE Himalaya Project will not only help the forest staff in handling the wildlife crimes and accidents, but will also be instrumental in ensuring last mile connectivity as well as effective patrolling in this geo-climatically harsh and remote landscape of Pangi Forest Division.
The Resident Commissioner – Pangi cm Chairperson, LLPMC-Pangi Sh. Balwan Chand said, “Equipping the Forest staff in Pangi Forest Division with these advanced equipments will be a key factor in reducing wildlife crimes and evidence based documentation will also ensure that the offenders never go unpunished”. He appreciated various Eco-Tourism and Cultural Tourism initiatives being taken under the SECURE Himalaya Project and emphasized on women engagement in these potential alternative livelihood options. He briefed about value addition interventions being taken under GoI-UNDP-GEF SECURE Himalaya Project namely Dairy Development Pilots, Crop Diversification Pilots, Dhoop Making Intervention, Value Addition support to Hazelnut & Walnut and highlighted, “High Value Low Volume strategy under these livelihood options, will provide livelihood to the folk as well as conservation to the Biodiversity”.
NUNV, GoI-UNDP-GEF SECURE Himalaya Project, Mr. Amit Mehta told, “This technological support has been provided under support to Rapid Response Teams, Communication support and Patrolling Kit support components under GoI-UNDP-GEF SECURE Himalaya Project in year 2021-22. Along with this, a series of Training & Capacity Building Programmes are also in the process of being conducted for Forest staff as well different stakeholders including local communities with special emphasis on women sector.” At last, he added that the “First Snow Festival of Pangi” is an initiative by Pangi Administration assisted by SECURE Himalaya Project to promote Winter Tourism, Eco-Tourism and Community Based Cultural & Natural Tourism in Pangi region that has caught attention at national & international tourism domains as alternative livelihood option, so that the present pressure on invaluable natural resources may be reduced.
