About
Recently, India has made remarkable advances in healthcare, more importantly in Child Health. Many states have come up with interesting and effective interventions which have collectively contributed to this. However, we feel that there’s a long way to achieve our Sustainable Development Goals. Hence, we propose the first International Child Health Summit, Kerala 2019 to share the experience we gained through these interventions and to call for action for continuing partnership to achieve the goals in a timely manner. The summit will also showcase pioneering models in child health interventions across the globe. The sessions will enable us in exploring the possibilities of adapting the interventions to the requirements of the state and also in building partnership with the forerunners.
India, the second-most populous country in the world, has been making remarkable efforts in the healthcare sector to bring in universally accessible, affordable healthcare, delivered with quality. The advancements in Child Health Sector are remarkable which has recently recorded an 8% decline in IMR (Source: SRS 2016). To make the best out of this momentum, every state is in the process of drafting strategies to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. This indeed requires a clear focus on restructuring health systems, both in terms of scale and sustainability, to ensure continual care for new-born. Equitable and quality assured services to the critically ill new-borns can ensure that ‘No one is left behind’ while ending the preventable childhood deaths – the SDG target.
Kerala, is one of the forerunners in regards to health indices among the Indian states, having set a ‘Kerala Model’ in public health sector. Kerala has come up with various successful models in the domain of health. The ‘Aardram Mission’, a component of the flagship programme ‘Navakeralam karmmapadhathi’ of Government of Kerala, focuses on Comprehensive Primary Health Care, Citizen-friendly hospital initiative, has transformed the Primary Health Centres to Family Health Centres which focuses on promotion of primordial and primary preventions at family level. ‘eHealth Kerala project’ has been on the roll-out phase, which envisages in building Electronic Health Record of every citizen. Electronic Medical Records of each visit will be added to the Health Record thereby enabling longitudinal reference possible, for monitoring progress of chronic diseases during follow-up visits. ‘Hridyam – for Little Hearts’ and ‘Shalabam – the Comprehensive New-born Screening Program’ are the two widely discussed healthcare innovative interventions from Kerala, in the Child Health sector, aiming to further reduce IMR and also to increase the survival with best possible quality of life.
