It is known for its small scale bandage manufacturing industries. The small town distributes these accessories in Uttar Pradesh and in the rest of India under various licenses. Recently manufacturing of readymade garments has also developed, contributing to the economy of the town.Historically, a city and district of British India, in the Bareilly Division of the United Provinces, now itself is a
divisional headquarter. The city is on the right bank of the river Ramganga, 655 ft. above sea-level, and has a station on the Oudh & Rohilkhand railway, 868 miles from Calcutta. (1901), 75,128. It was founded in 1625 by Rustam Khan, who built the fort which overhangs the river bank, and the fine Jama Masjid or great mosque (1631). In 1776 it was taken over by the Sahaspur-Bilari state. Kanth was a princely state (riyasat), whose last valid prince was Kunwar Dhyan Singh Vishnoi. since he did not have any legal heir, he invested large amount of money in philanthropic works like inter and degree colleges and a public hospital. He granted large tracts of land to the college premises and Bhud Mandir at Kanth. The Kunwar was alleged to be murdered (according to local anecdotes) by poisoning by his relatives in quest of the large fortunes left by him.
