Among the many national parks of India the name of the Sasan Gir National Park, also called the Gir National Park, occupies an important place. The only surviving habitat of the Asiatic Lions (300-odd) in the world, the Sasan Gir National Park is located at the base of the Saurashtra Peninsula in the western Indian state of Gujarat. Records indicate that as of April 2005, the lion count in Sasan Gir National Park has increased to 359 as compared to the 327 of 2001. Since its inception, the total number of lions bred has been estimated at 180. The National Park of Gir is also an important and ideal home for another impressive animal known as leopard. The park accommodates the largest population of leopards in the country. It exhibits mixed deciduous type of vegetation with teak, Acacia, Banyan and flame of the forest as its main trees.
