Piglet anaemia is very common in pigs exclusively raised on concrete floor with no exces to soil under intensive system. Piglets born with 50 mg iron reserve into their liver with daily requirement of 7 mg iron per day. But mother pig(sow) milk is deficit in iron content and piglet get only 1 mg iron from their mother with a further deficit of around 6 mg iron per day. Thus within 7-8 days they exhausted all the reserved iron stored into their liver and suffer from sever anaemia, subsequently died within 15-20 days after their birth causing significant losses to the farmer.
To prevent this Inj. Irondextran ( 200 mg) 2 ml can be given intramuscularly at neck/ hind leg region on 3-4 days age which will protect them for 21 days; the same should be repeated on 21st days age.

Pig farming is important for many reasons, including:

Meat production: Pigs are a major source of meat, and are more efficient feed converters than other livestock.

Waste reduction: Pigs can eat a wide variety of foods, including damaged feeds, and convert them into meat.

Manure: Pig manure can be used to maintain soil fertility.

Employment: Pig farming can provide jobs for rural farmers.

Adaptability: Pigs can adapt to a variety of environments and are resistant to many diseases.

Profitability: Pigs can be profitable because they have a high feed-to-meat conversion ratio and can be raised on a small scale.

Short generation interval: Pigs reach sexual maturity early and can have multiple litters per year.

Nearly all parts are edible: Nearly all parts of a pig can be consumed or sold.

Low initial investment: Pig farming requires relatively little initial investment in buildings and equipment.
