The Housemaid’s Secret
By Freida McFadden
The cover says “Psychological thriller” and the book delivers.

Reading Experience:
The Housemaid ended with Millie being the maid who helps women trapped in bad marriages and this book continues on those lines.
The prologue already sets the tension and my first instinct was that Millie somehow gets in a bad situation herself while helping another wife in a bad marriage. Then the book starts along the same lines. There is a lot of connection to the first book so I would suggest reading The Housemaid first.
The story moves as expected - a woman trapped in a bad marriage confides in Millie and tries to escape. But she is caught.
Eventually Millie, against her own judgement, shoots the husband.
This is where the story gets interesting. The wife pins the whole murder on Millie. Also, when Millie looks at the photos of the murdered man she realises that he is not the one she shot.
The ending is pretty crazy. Beats all kinds of theories and expectations of the reader.
After the happy ending, it makes me think that the book title says “The Housemaid’s Secret”, but WHAT SECRET? It feels like the book is over but there happens to be no secret. And then in the last page, the author reveals the secret. It’s amazing how the author makes us think with her words.
I would definitely suggest both these books to my fellow readers.

The Housemaid
By Freida McFadden

**Spoiler Alert**
I must say, the book kept me so hooked that I completed it in under 10 days.
I like how the narration alternates between the two women - Nina and Millie. So different yet so similar. Nina has a daughter she could die for, while Millie has no family. Despite different backgrounds both somehow end up in the same situation.
Where Millie is smart enough to get out of the situation on her own, Nina is smart enough to find someone who will get her out of it. In the end, Millie not only saves herself but also pulls out Nina from that situation.
To be honest I had already seen the movie, so I kind of knew the ending. But the ending of the book could not be more different than the movie.
I had a very different experience of watching the movie and reading the book. In the book, every chapter ends with a suspenseful note which is what made me want to read one more chapter. The story, the words used, the sentences framed - are so good that I could picture each and every scene in the book.
I must say the movie does not show Enzo enough, but the book has a lot to say about him. But I do have a question, if Enzo was not afraid of murdering Andrew, why was he waiting for Nina’s approval to go forward with it? He knew the truth, he had the strength, he had the means. Why wait for Nina to say yes?

CRIME AND PUNISHMENT
By Fyodor Dostoyevsky

A classic I was told & here is my reading experience:
Honestly, I started this book because the summary at the back of the book intrigued me. It mentioned “Raskolnikov commits a random murder …. embarks on a game of cat and mouse with a police investigator”. So my mind immediately assumed that this is another murder mystery.
Excitedly I started the book. The first 90 pages and there is no murder yet. By this point I am running out of patience I mean either do it or don’t. Why are you tormenting the reader!!!
And then starts the rollercoaster.
Finally on page 91 Raskolnikov is off to The murder. But then on page 92, he can’t find an axe. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? Then on page 93 he does find the holy axe and finally someone is murdered.
Now that was the only roller coaster I found in this book. There has been a murder but it is no mystery.
The funny part is that after the murder there is much less talk about the murder. The story shifts on to the other characters and their lives and somehow the murder takes a backseat.
Okay, now let’s get to the other characters. Honestly, there was not a single character in the book that gave me positive vibes exept maybe Sonya. By the end I am as confused as the characters of the book I am questioning each and every character, their intentions and actions.
Raskolnikov is such a confused soul. Does he want to murder? Does he want to confess? Is he guilty? Is he not? There is just too much confusion up till the last page of the book.
I don’t think I would be recommending this book to someone else. But obviously it is a classic so doesn’t need recommendations!
Would I read more books by this author? For now, a big no. Maybe in the future I would.
