Human-wildlife conflict mitigation operation to ensure public safety vis-a-vis wild elephant straying

Location: Uttar Khagrabari–Petkati area, Maynaguri Block, Jalpaiguri
Early morning during dawn, a single wild elephant was reported straying in the densely populated Uttar Khagrabari–Petkati area under Moynaguri Block. The situation was closely monitored with utmost priority given to public safety and continuous vigilance and tracking of the movement of the lone Makhna elephant.
Armed Forest field teams were sent in from multiple Squads and Ranges, supported by Police personnel and District Administration. The Maynaguri main road was temporarily closed and vehicular traffic diverted. Railway authorities were notified due to the close proximity of railway tracks.
Prohibitory orders u/s 163, BNSS, was requisitioned for, and subsequently declared by the District Administration. Chemical immobilisation/tranquilisation teams were readied and kept on standby in situ.
A cordon was set up and the perimeter around the populated area was secured. Extraordinary cooperation was received from the local residents who were in synergy with the advisories received from the authorities.
The operation carried on through the day, during which time the wild elephant charged at Forest personnel, wherein the lives of two of our men were narrowly saved (video/photo footage enclosed).
At around 1815 hrs the elephant moved towards the Jhaldhaka River, passing through Vatir Danga, Khatur Bari, and Charer Bari. To ensure its safe passage and prevent any untoward incident, Forest field teams were deployed at Charer Bari and adjoining areas till the early morning of 26/10/2025.
Going beyond the call of duty, at great peril to their personal safety, our personnel ensured that the situation was resolved peacefully, without any human casualties or injuries.
