Dengue: A febrile illness with a rash, high fevers, headaches, and muscle pain. There are four distinct dengue viruses, and each infection provides lifelong immunity to that serotype. However, immunity to other serotypes is limited, and infection with a different serotype can lead to a more severe form of the disease, such as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome (DSS).
Yellow fever: A hemorrhagic fever with hepatitis that is endemic in some African and South American countries. There is a safe and effective vaccine for yellow fever.
West Nile virus: A flavivirus that causes illness.
Tick-borne encephalitis: A flavivirus that causes encephalitis.
St. Louis encephalitis: A flavivirus that causes encephalitis.
Japanese encephalitis: A flavivirus that causes encephalitis.
Powassan: A flavivirus that causes encephalitis.
Kyasanur Forest disease virus: A flavivirus that causes hemorrhagic fever.
Alkhurma virus: A flavivirus.
Omsk virus: A flavivirus.
Flaviviruses are spread by mosquitoes and ticks, and can cause a range of illnesses, from mild fevers to severe diseases and death. Symptoms include headache, muscle pain, joint pain, lethargy, and sometimes a rash. Full recovery can take several months.
Vaccines are available for some flaviviruses, but others are difficult to develop.
