A Silent Hero Remembered: A Tribute to Chiemi Sanga

In memory of a compassionate leader whose quiet actions inspired change around the world.

---

Honoring a Life of Service

This message is dedicated to Chiemi Sanga from Japan, a compassionate leader from the Sasakawa Health Foundation, whose contributions to the welfare of persons affected by leprosy go far beyond what words can ever truly express.

There are a few extraordinary individuals in this world who carry out their duties with quiet determination, not for recognition, but out of pure empathy and unwavering dedication. Chiemi was one such rare soul. Though she left us at the age of 58, her legacy is vast, her kindness immeasurable, and her impact deeply felt across continents.

---

The Silent Strength Behind the Scenes

Chiemi had an incredible way of supporting those working on the frontlines. She never sought the spotlight, but her presence was always felt. She paid close attention to the work of grassroots changemakers—those who often go unrecognized—and made it her mission to uplift and encourage them.

She inspired countless individuals, including myself, through her quiet observations and thoughtful words. Her ability to reach out, acknowledge, and validate someone’s hard work had a power that cannot be overstated.

---

A Message That Changed Everything

I still remember the day Chiemi reached out to me via Facebook Messenger. We had never spoken before. Yet she had been silently following my work, and when she finally wrote to me, her message read:

> “Hi Sunil, I am Chiemi Sanga from Sasakawa Health Foundation and contacting you for the first time. We are going to post an article in the WHO Goodwill Ambassador's Newsletter, and in the article, we will introduce the Global Leprosy Champions' activities. Is it possible for us to use your photo? We think your picture represents the activity of a Global Leprosy Champion well.”

That message brought tears to my eyes. I had no words. All I could do was thank her deeply from my heart.

At a time when my efforts felt invisible, her kind message became a turning point.

---

The Struggles of the Pandemic

During the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns, I saw the ground realities faced by people affected by leprosy in self-settled colonies across globe and extended my support to person affected with leprosy living in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, and beyond. Many were cut off from food and resources. I did what I could and managed to provide food materials to over 350 families. I shared these efforts in global forums, but there was little recognition or response.

Naturally, I felt discouraged.

But then, in 2021, Chiemi became a ray of hope. Her encouragement reminded me that someone was watching, someone cared. Because of her, I was inspired to extend help to 200 more families and to start new initiatives—like providing education for children living in leprosy colonies during Covid Time.

All of this happened because one person believed in me.

---

A Global Legacy

Soon after, my photo was published in the WHO Goodwill Ambassador’s Bulletin, as part of an article highlighting the work of Global Leprosy Champions. That single recognition, facilitated by Chiemi, had a ripple effect. It gave me the confidence and motivation to dream bigger, to serve better, and to inspire others.

Through this experience, I realized that if Chiemi supported me this way, she must have touched countless other lives around the world. Her silent acts of encouragement helped fuel movements, shape projects, and strengthen the resolve of people like me working in the field.

---

A Final Thank You

Chiemi Sanga was more than a professional—she was a true humanitarian, a silent hero who never needed attention but gave it generously to others. She empowered people with dignity and reminded them that their work mattered.

Though I never had the chance to meet her in person before 2022, her presence in my life has been deeply meaningful. Her message will always stay in my heart, not just as a personal memory, but as a reminder of the power of kindness, empathy, and recognition.

This article is dedicated to Chiemi—not only as a tribute to her work but as a celebration of a life well-lived in service of others.

---

Thank you, Chiemi. Your legacy will live on in every life you touched, in every act of compassion inspired by your words, and in every changemaker who continues because you believed in them.

Happy Teacher’s Day to the very first teacher of my life – my mother – who showed me the true path to walk on. She always guided me to follow truth and justice. Her words still echo in my heart: “If you are born poor, it is destiny, but if you die poor, it means you have not worked enough in your life.”

Her dreams were always big, and she was a great admirer of our Honorable Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi Ji. I still remember the day when I was in Bhubaneswar, resting in her lap, and on TV we saw Modi Ji visiting his mother to seek blessings after winning the Lok Sabha elections. My mother looked at me and said, “How proud a mother must be, whose son became the Prime Minister of India.” I had no words then, but I promised myself to do something meaningful for society that would make her proud.

Though today she rests in heaven, her blessings continue to guide me. Some of the achievements made possible because of her inspiration include:

1. A decade-long fight for justice that finally reached the United Nations regarding disability rights of persons affected by leprosy.

2. Advocating for vaccination rights for persons affected by leprosy and disability during the Covid-19 crisis to national and international forums.

3. Worked on waiver of fees in the International Leprosy Conference, Bali, for persons affected by leprosy.

4. Distribution of food supplies to more than 350 families living in self-settled colonies across Uttarakhand, Bihar, and Andhra Pradesh.

5. Publication of my book The Felony: A Social Justice Since 1000 Years, dedicated to disability rights of persons affected by leprosy.

…and many more initiatives, all possible only through her blessings.

Today, I am determined to take bigger steps in the field of social justice – all because of the guidance and blessings of my first teacher, my beloved mother.

🙏 Thank you, God, for giving me such a great mother and teacher.
🌸 Happy Teacher’s Day, Bou. 🌸

Justice for All — A Dream Deferred or a Promise in Action?

The preamble of our Constitution declares “Justice for All,” but we must pause and ask: Is justice truly available to everyone, or is it still the privilege of the rich and powerful? In a society where legal remedies are too often delayed or denied, the promise of justice frequently remains unfulfilled for the most vulnerable.

Across India, and indeed the world, countless people have lost their lives in their relentless pursuit of justice. They died waiting, unheard, and neglected by systems meant to protect them. Their pain echoes a deeper truth—justice delayed is justice denied, and for the poor and powerless, it is often not even accessible.

I, too, have been fighting for my legitimate rights for years. My battle represents not just personal issues, but the collective struggle of many who are marginalised—whether due to poverty, disability, social barriers, or disease. Yet, through every obstacle, our determination has only grown stronger.

A defining moment in this journey was in 2020, when we observed the first-ever World Injustice Day, focusing on the disability rights of persons affected by leprosy across the globe. For decades, rights of person affected with leprosy was invisible in the conversation around justice. But our movement gave voice to , and after persistent advocacy, our message finally reached the United Nations. It was a historic step that showed how people’s movements can create global impact.

This year, on 25th August, we will again come together to observe World Injustice Day. The theme—"Justice for All"—is not just a slogan, but a renewed pledge to hold systems accountable and to amplify the cries of those silenced by oppression and neglect.

Our movement now has a broader and deeper mission. We are not just fighting for disability rights or leprosy-affected persons—we are fighting for every poor, voiceless, and powerless individual who deserves justice but remains unheard.

Let us come together in solidarity. Let us carry forward the spirit of compassion, equality, and truth. It’s time to ensure that justice is not a luxury for the few, but a right for all.
Join the movement. Demand justice. Be the voice. Be the change.

Does Justice Truly Exist?

Today, I am deeply saddened and shaken by the tragic demise of a 20-year-old college girl from FM College, who lost her life while relentlessly pursuing justice. Her story is not just heartbreaking — it is a glaring reminder of the failures of our justice system. She knocked on every possible door, cried out for help, and waited in hope that someone, somewhere, would act — but no one did. And now, we have lost a young, promising life that could have been saved.

This is not an isolated case. Time and again, we have witnessed how the system tends to favour the powerful, the wealthy, and the well-connected, while the common man is left to suffer in silence. When will justice become a right and not a privilege? Why must the poor fight lifelong battles just to be heard, let alone get justice?

Her death is not just a personal loss to her family — it is an indictment of a broken system that failed her. If the authorities had acted swiftly, if her pleas had been taken seriously, she would still be among us today, dreaming of a better future. Instead, we now mourn her and question a system that failed to uphold its most basic duty.

It is high time we reflect on what justice truly means. It should not be something one has to chase. It should not be dependent on status, money, or power. Justice should be swift, fair, and accessible to every citizen — rich or poor, weak or strong.

Let this young girl’s death not go in vain. Let it awaken our collective conscience and stir us to demand reforms. We need a system where justice is not a privilege for a few, but a right for all.
