Sikkim’s Gyalshing Omchung Gram Panchayat wins national award for rural development

Gangtok, March 31 (IPR): Bringing national recognition to Sikkim’s grassroots governance framework, Gyalshing Omchung Gram Panchayat under Gyalshing District has been selected as an awardee of the prestigious Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) 2025 under the theme “Poverty-Free & Enhanced Livelihoods Panchayat.”

According to an official communication issued by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, Government of India, the Gram Panchayat has secured the 3rd rank at the national level under the said category for the year 2025.

The award is a significant recognition of the Panchayat’s dedicated efforts towards promoting sustainable rural development, strengthening livelihoods, and working towards poverty alleviation through effective grassroots governance.

The achievement reflects the commitment and coordinated efforts of the Panchayat representatives, local stakeholders, and the Rural Management & Development Department, Government of Sikkim, in implementing people-centric development initiatives at the village level.

Urgent Appeal for Timely Completion of Geyzing Sewage and Road Works

Gyalshing, Sikkim – 18/03/2026

The Zilla Panchayat Member of Gyalshing Territorial Constituency, Shri Sagar Sharma, has formally submitted representations to the Road & Bridge Department and the Public Health Engineering Department regarding delays in sewage works and the deteriorating condition of roads in Geyzing.

With the onset of the monsoon season, residents are experiencing significant inconvenience due to poor drainage and unsafe road conditions. The situation poses risks to public health, mobility, and overall community welfare.

Shri Sharma emphasized:
“With the rains underway, residents are suffering due to poor drainage and damaged roads. I have urged both departments to act swiftly and restore convenience for the public.”

Key Demands Highlighted in the Appeal:
Immediate action to complete sewage and drainage works without further delay.

Repair and maintenance of damaged roads to ensure safe passage.

Strong inter-departmental coordination to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure efficiency.

The Zilla Panchayat Member has assured residents that he will continue to monitor the situation closely and press for accountability until the works are completed.

Gyalshing Omchung GPU Nominated for National Award 2026
Theme: Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihood
Gyalshing, Sikkim – March 10, 2026
The 28 Gyalshing Omchung Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) has been officially nominated for the National Award 2026 under the theme “Poverty-Free and Enhanced Livelihood.” This marks a proud moment for the State of Sikkim, as Omchung GPU is the only Gram Panchayat Unit from Sikkim to receive this nomination this year.
This recognition holds special significance as no GPU from Sikkim has been nominated for this Award since 2020 prestigious award. The nomination highlights the GPU’s continuous and dedicated efforts in poverty alleviation, livelihood promotion, and inclusive rural development.
On 9th March 2026, a Central Verification Team conducted a detailed field verification at Omchung GPU. The team consisted of:
Shri Satyajit Patro and Shri Pankaj Kumar from Ministry of Panchayati Raj (MoPR),Govt of India , New Delhi.
The verification process was carried out in the presence of:
Panchayat President, Ward Panchayats members,
Zilla Panchayat Member,
State Consultant from NIRDPR,
AD PRI and Jr. Faculty from SIRD
Panchayat Coordinator from the Head Office
Self-Help Groups (SHG)s, GPU functionaries, ICDS workers and
ASHA workers
Their participation reflected strong community involvement, transparency in governance, and a collective commitment toward sustainable rural development.
Local representatives expressed their sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Panchayati Raj and the Ministry of Rural Development for recognizing the efforts of the Panchayat. They emphasized that this nomination is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Panchayat members, SHGs, ASHA workers, and the people of Omchung GPU.
This recognition further strengthens the vision of building a poverty-free, self-reliant, and progressive rural Sikkim.

The installation of these lights aims to improve visibility and ensure safer movement for pedestrians, students, and vehicles during the evening and night hours. Better lighting along the road will also help reduce the chances of accidents and improve overall public safety in the area.

FREE ZILLA COACHING INITIATIVE CONCLUDES FOURTH SUCCESSFUL YEAR AT MIDDLE GYALSHING SECONDARY SCHOOL

The Free Zilla Coaching Initiative, led by Shri Sagar Sharma , successfully concluded its fourth consecutive year today at Middle Gyalshing Secondary School, Gyalshing, Sikkim, marking another significant milestone in its journey of providing equitable educational support to students.

The 40-day free coaching programme offered intensive academic support to Class 12 students from the Commerce and Humanities streams, along with doubt-clearing sessions for Class 10 students. These sessions helped strengthen conceptual understanding and enabled students to prepare confidently for their board examinations.

Launched in 2022, the Free Zilla Coaching Initiative was envisioned to ensure that financial constraints do not become a barrier to quality education. Over the past four years, the programme has consistently worked towards empowering students by providing structured guidance, academic mentoring, and a supportive learning environment—particularly for those from under-resourced backgrounds.

The concluding ceremony featured a photo session and the distribution of progress reports, following a five-day evaluation examination. This assessment allowed students to review their academic progress, identify areas for improvement, and gain valuable exam-oriented feedback.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Sagar Sharma, founder of the initiative, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who dedicated their time and expertise to the programme:
“The commitment and sincerity of the teachers have been the backbone of this initiative. Their selfless contribution has played a crucial role in shaping students’ academic journeys,” he said.

He also extended thanks to all supporters and well-wishers who contributed resources and encouragement, enabling the smooth ex*****on of the programme.

Special appreciation was conveyed to the students, their families, and the local community, whose trust and cooperation made the initiative possible.

The successful completion of this year’s programme once again highlights the positive impact of community-driven educational initiatives in strengthening public education and supporting students during critical academic phases.

The conclusion of the Free Zilla Coaching Initiative for this year reflects the collective effort and shared commitment to nurturing young minds in Gyalshing, Sikkim.

This year’s programme was made possible through funds utilized from the 5th State Finance Commission, ensuring transparency and accountability in supporting educational development.

Free Zilla Coaching proudly congratulates Kumaree Sharma, a dedicated and inspiring teacher at Free Zilla Coaching, on the successful launch of her first book, “THE VILLAGE THAT CHANGED ME,” at Middle Geyzing Secondary School (Free Coaching Centre).

The book launch ceremony was held in the august presence of Zilla Panchayat Sagar Sharma , respected faculty members, and more than 90 enthusiastic students, making the occasion both meaningful and memorable.

The event celebrated not only the publication of a literary work but also the values of learning, reflection, and community engagement that Kumaree Sharma embodies as an educator.

As a committed teacher, Kumaree Sharma has always encouraged students to learn beyond textbooks, and her book reflects the same philosophy. “THE VILLAGE THAT CHANGED ME” is a soulful tribute to Sikkim—India’s hidden gem, inspired by her deep connection with the land, its people, and its culture.
