🌿 World Wetlands Day 2026 | Tihulia Beel, Morigaon 🌿
The Directorate of Fisheries, Assam, in collaboration with ARIAS Society, organised a community-based awareness programme today at Tihulia Beel, Morigaon, to mark World Wetlands Day 2026. An awareness session on wetland conservation was conducted by Dr. Sanjay Sarma, District Fisheries Development Officer, Kamrup, focusing on the importance of wetlands and fisheries-based livelihoods. This was followed by a key address by Dr. Ramendra Chandra Barman, Deputy Director, Directorate of Fisheries, Assam, who highlighted the link between wetlands, food security, and community-led conservation.
An interactive discussion was facilitated by Ms. Sheetal Sharma, Social Safeguard Specialist, ARIAS Society, engaging local communities on traditional practices and challenges related to wetland use. The programme emphasised the ecological importance of wetlands, their role in sustaining fisheries-based livelihoods, and the value of traditional knowledge in wetland conservation, with active participation from local communities.
