We’re really excited to share another one of our units, Maanas. This is located outside Maanas Dispensary and Primary School (Sector 43, Gurgaon), a dispensary run by the All India Human Development Council to provide free health services to those who are most in need. The units will also help the students at Maanas Primary School, which provides free education to children from weaker sections of society. While the school is currently closed, the unit is being used by over 150 people who are visiting each week receive medical check-ups. Also, the unit has been located outside Maaas Dispensary so that it can be used by the general public as well. If you are ever in the area and need to wash your hands, keep an eye out for our unit!

We are extremely excited to announce that our first 3 handwashing stations have been installed in Sadar Bazaar, Gurgaon!

Sadar Bazaar has a daily footfall in the thousands and is the workplace of hundreds of vendors and redi wallas, which makes the provision of sanitation facilities at the market crucial.

Guru, the unit featured below, is located in Sadar Bazaar near the Gurudwara and has been operational since the 31st of August. It has already been used hundreds of times by the market's workers as visitors as well as people visiting the Gurudwara for langar (Sikh communal free kitchen).

We have been working closely with local stakeholders to ensure that the unit is secure and easy to operate and maintain. The unit has been anchored to the ground and the liquid soap dispenser is bolted on to prevent theft. The water is automatically refilled via the main water supply and wastewater is emptied into a proper drainage point.

We are learning from experience and refining our units. We introduced a stopper to reduce the pressure on the taps and improved the foot pedal system.

Use our unit if you are ever in the area and stay tuned for progress on our other pilot units!

India’s Covid19 cases have exceeded 3.6 million. But as lockdown restrictions are easing, informal workers are forced to return to work. CHI aims to provide accessible handwash facilities to keep them safe.

We work closely with local communities and partners to install foot pedal-operated handwash stations in wholesale markets, mandis and street vending zones. Our model comprises an easily refillable water tank mounted on a specially designed stand with sprinkler taps and liquid soap dispensers. Foot pedals reduce the risk of re-contamination and the sprinkler tap improves water efficiency. A unit could be used for 500 handwashes per 500 litres of water without needing to be refilled.

While we began our initiative with wholesale markets in mind, we soon realised that the need extends far beyond these. Our model can also be customised for use outside hospitals, schools, gurudwaras and other places of worship, and slums. The ease of installation and manufacturing makes it scalable.

In Gurgaon, we are installing 11 units in key locations and are working on scaling up and expanding to nearby cities. We are assisting organisations all over India in setting up their own Clean Hands Chapters, or incorporate the Clean Hands model within local entrepreneurship programmes.

Clean Hands Initiative develops viable solutions for safe and sustainable livelihoods

CHI's vision is to improve the street market experience for both customers and the vendors, by providing accessible public handwash facilities.

CHI emerged out of a desire to keep India’s street vendors, reddiwallahs, outdoor market workers safe. In doing so, we improve the street market experience for both the workers and the customers by making street vending cleaner, safer, and more hygienic for all.
