Progressive Assam Society (প্ৰগতিশীল অসম সমাজ) was founded in 2019 as a collective based in Delhi by a group of students who felt the need to create a platform, to bring into discussion ideas and concepts about identity, culture and the arts of the region, with an aim to bridge the diverse nuances that exist within. The collective also actively organised protest meetings and mobilised students concerning various indigenous issues of the land.
However, COVID-19 was a major challenge for all of us and hence, our activities faced major constraints during that time period. Post COVID, this is our endeavour to come back into the public sphere, with renewed vigour and conviction to facilitate safe progressive discourses concerning the region.
Our objective
We strive to better understand the discourses, the debates and the narratives that govern public sentiments in the region, and to create a progressive space where individuals can freely explore and express opinions concerning the region.
We are a collective of students with a vision of exploring art, literature and culture with an open outlook. We understand that art is political and given where we come from, a land continuously challenged by socio-economic, political, and environmental instabilities, we aspire to bridge together the diversity of the land, its various communities, appreciate its richness as well as engage in critical, constructive conversations regarding these issues.
As a collective, we shall meet on a regular basis, share reading resources, publish write ups, conduct seminars, and organise issues concerning the region and its peoples, while also exploring the distinct arts and cultures of the land through community building initiatives, events and programmes.
