Awareness Campaign and Orientation Session on Food Processing & Value Addition concluded Successfully at Assam Lingzey GPU Under Sikkim Inspire Programme.

Two-Day programme on Food Processing and Value Addition concluded successfully on 10th - 11th March 2026, bringing together participants interested in enhancing their knowledge and skills in food preservation, processing techniques, and value-added food products.

The programme aimed to create awareness about the importance of food processing in reducing post-harvest losses, improving shelf life, and generating additional income opportunities through value addition. During the sessions, resource persons shared practical knowledge on various processing methods, hygienic food handling practices, packaging techniques, and small-scale entrepreneurship in the food sector.

Participants were given demonstrations and hands-on exposure to the preparation of different value-added food products using locally available agricultural produce. The training also emphasized the role of food processing in promoting sustainable livelihoods and strengthening rural economies.

Joint Inspection Conducted at Rangpo Bazar to Ensure Compliance with Food Safety Standards

Rangpo, 10 October 2025:
A joint inspection drive was conducted at Rangpo Bazar by the Food Safety & Standards Cell (FSS Cell), Health & Family Welfare Department, in collaboration with the Food and Civil Supplies Department and Rangpo Nagar Panchayat. The operation was further supported by the Rangpo Sikkim Police, ensuring smooth ex*****on of the inspection activities.

The objective of the inspection was to ensure that all Food Business Operators (FBOs) operating in the market are in strict compliance with the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, Rules and Regulations.

During the inspection, various parameters such as hygiene standards, storage conditions, labelling compliance, and handling practices were thoroughly examined. Awareness was also created among the vendors regarding their responsibility to maintain safe and hygienic food practices for the well-being of consumers.

The FSS Cell has reiterated that such inspection drives will continue across different locations to ensure food safety and to safeguard public health.

Joint Inspection Conducted at Lal Bazar, Gangtok to Ensure Food Safety Compliance

Gangtok, 10 October, 2025.

The Food Safety & Standards Cell, Health & Family Welfare Department, conducted a joint inspection at Lal Bazar, Gangtok, as part of its ongoing efforts to ensure public health and food safety standards in the state.

The inspection team comprised officials from the Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services Department and the Gangtok Municipal Corporation. The team thoroughly assessed various food establishments and vendors within the market premises.

During the inspection, several lapses were observed in hygiene, sanitation, and food handling practices. In view of these findings, Improvement Notices were issued to the concerned Food Business Operators (FBOs), directing them to rectify the deficiencies within the stipulated time frame.

The Department urges all Food Business Operators to adhere strictly to food safety protocols and maintain high standards of cleanliness in the interest of Public Health.

Three-Day FoSTaC Training Successfully Concludes in Gangtok District

Gangtok, September 22, 2025:
The Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC) programme for Gangtok district was successfully held from 20th to 22nd September 2025 at the Sikkim Livestock Development Board Hall, Deorali and Mayfair . The three-day training witnessed an overwhelming participation of over 300 food business operators and stakeholders, who actively engaged in the sessions.

FoSTaC, an initiative of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), is a flagship capacity-building programme designed to train and certify food handlers across various sectors. The training focuses on essential aspects of food safety, including safe food handling practices, personal hygiene, sanitation, and compliance with regulatory standards, thereby promoting a culture of food safety across the country.

Through a mix of interactive lectures, group discussions, and practical demonstrations, participants were sensitized on the importance of maintaining food quality and hygiene to safeguard public health. At the end of the training, participants underwent an assessment, and successful candidates will be awarded FoSTaC certification, enabling them to implement and advocate safe food practices in their respective fields.

The large-scale participation highlights the growing awareness and commitment towards ensuring food safety in Sikkim. This initiative marks a significant step forward in strengthening the food safety ecosystem of Gangtok district in alignment with FSSAI’s vision of “Safe and Nutritious Food for All.”

Inauguration of 'Khaugali' – A Modern Food Street at Namnang Deorali, Gangtok under Eat Right India Campaign

Gangtok, 4th June 2025: A significant step towards transforming the street food landscape in Sikkim, Khaugali the modernized food street at Namnang Deorali, Gangtok was formally inaugurated by Shri Arun Upreti, Hon’ble Minister for Rural Management and Development Department, Government of Sikkim. This initiative is part of the Eat Right India campaign spearheaded by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Government of India, aiming to ensure access to safe, hygienic, and nutritious food for all.

The inaugural event was graced by several esteemed dignitaries including the Hon’ble Deputy Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation, councillors from Arithang and Deorali wards, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Urban Development Department, Project Director of the Swachh Bharat Mission, and officials from the Health Department, Power & Energy Department, and Sikkim Police. The local residents of the area also marked their presence at the ceremony.

With a total project cost of ₹1 crore, the Khaugali project was funded by the National Health Mission (NHM), Government of India (Sikkim) and jointly executed in collaboration with Health Department and Gangtok Municipal Corporation.

The initiative not only modernizes traditional street food vending spaces but also integrates public health priorities with urban planning to create a vibrant, clean, and safe food destination.

Date: 7th June 2025

To Celebrate 50 Years of State Hood and World Food Safety Day, the FDA Cell & State IEC Bureau, Health & Family Welfare Department, Government of Sikkim Conducted an Extensive awareness programme held at the ICAR Conference Hall, Tadong, Gangtok and PM Shari Biraspati Parsai Senior Secondary School, Ranipool.

The event aimed to highlight the critical importance of food safety and to promote healthier food practices, with special emphasis on the rising concern of obesity associated with poor dietary habits and unsafe food.

Over 110+ Food Business Operators (FBOs) from across Gangtok District, took part in the programme with great enthusiasm and dedication. They were also imparted FoSTaC Training focusing on personal hygiene, safe food handling, storage protocols, prevention of cross contamination, and compliance with FSSAI guidelines.

The event addressed the alarming increase in obesity, particularly linked to the consumption of ultra-processed foods high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. Discussions emphasized the need for food handlers to promote healthier food options and provide clear labeling for informed consumer choices.

The programme aligned with the global theme of World Food Safety Day 2025: “Food Safety: Prepare for the Unexpected,” highlighting the role of safe food.

In Addition, the program also featured a live practical demonstration by the Technical Team of the State Food Laboratory, highlighting simple and effective methods for detecting common food adulterants. Students actively participated in the demonstration, gaining hands-on knowledge on identifying unsafe food substances at PM Shari Biraspati Parsai Senior Secondary School, Ranipool.

The event emphasized the importance of informed food choices, scientific vigilance, and personal responsibility in preventing food-related health issues.

The programme concluded with a collective pledge by all stakeholders to uphold food safety standards and work collaboratively to promote healthier lifestyles through safe and nutritious food. The Food Safety and Standards Cell reaffirmed its commitment to continuing such initiatives to empower both food businesses and consumers in building a healthier Sikkim.

In light of the recent viral video circulating on social media regarding the quality and safety of packaged milk produced by Sikkim Milk Union, the FSS team led by Food Safety Officer, Gangtok District conducted an inspection of the premises today, i.e. 22nd April 2025, at Sikkim Milk Union, Lumsey. During the inspection, enforcement samples were collected and have been sent to an NABL accredited food testing laboratory for analysis. The test results are currently awaited.
