Sikkim Ice Hockey Team Departs for One-Month Training Camp at Dehradun
The Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, is pleased to announce that a team comprising five selected Ice Hockey participants (three boys and two girls) along with one Team Coordinator departed today, 05 June 2026, for a one-month Ice Hockey Training Camp at Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
The training programme is being conducted under the Vibrant Villages Programme (VVP) and aims to provide specialized training, technical skills, and competitive exposure to young athletes from Sikkim in the winter sport of Ice Hockey.
Ice Hockey is an internationally recognized winter sport and is featured in the Winter Olympic Games, Asian Winter Championships, and various international youth sporting events. The Government of India has also included and promoted Ice Hockey under the Khelo India initiative to encourage the growth of winter sports across the country.
This marks a historic achievement for Sikkim, as it is the first time that the State has officially participated in an Ice Hockey training programme of this nature. Upon completion of the training, the participants will return to Sikkim and share their knowledge and skills with local youth, thereby contributing to the development and promotion of Ice Hockey and other winter sports in the State.
The team expressed its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, Chairperson, State Sports Development Board, Sikkim, and Mrs. Yangchen D. Tamang, SCS, Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, for their constant encouragement, support, and guidance in making this opportunity possible for the young athletes of Sikkim.
The Sports & Youth Affairs Department extends its best wishes to the participants and wishes them a safe journey, successful training, and a rewarding experience. It is hoped that this initiative will inspire more young people from Sikkim to participate in winter sports and represent the State and the Nation at higher levels in the future.

No World To***co Day 2026 Pledge Ceremony.

On the occasion of World No To***co Day 2026, the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs organized a pledge-taking ceremony on 5th June 2026 at the Department Headquarters, Paljor Stadium, NSS Office, and Resh*thang.
At the Headquarters, the pledge was administered by the Secretary, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, reaffirming the Department’s commitment to promoting a to***co-free lifestyle and raising awareness about the harmful effects of to***co use.
Officers and staff enthusiastically participated in the pledge, pledging to stay away from to***co and to encourage others to adopt healthy and positive lifestyles.

On 29th May 2026 the Inauguration of the Newly Renovated Table Tennis Hall and Weightlifting Hall at White Hall Complex

The Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, organized the inauguration ceremony of the newly renovated Table Tennis Hall and Weightlifting Hall at the White Hall Complex, Gangtok funded by the State Sports Development Board.

The programme was graced by Shri Lakpa Moktan, State Youth President, SKM Party, as the Chief Guest. Shri Basant Yonzon, Chairperson, Sports & Youth Development Board (SYDB), attended the programme as a distinguished guest. Shri Kuber Bhandari, Chief Information Commissioner, was also present on the occasion along with veteran members of the Sikkim Table Tennis Association, members of the Sikkim Weightlifting Association, and officers and staff of the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, including officials from the Engineering Cell.

The programme commenced with the ceremonial inauguration of the renovated Table Tennis Hall through the lighting of the traditional lamp by the Chief Guest and dignitaries, followed by the cutting of a commemorative cake. Thereafter, the renovated Weightlifting Hall was formally inaugurated through a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The formal function began with a welcome address delivered by the Joint Director (Coaching), who welcomed the distinguished guests and participants. This was followed by an address from Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, Chairperson, State Sports Development Board (SSDB), who highlighted the significance of upgrading sports infrastructure and reaffirmed the Department’s commitment to providing quality facilities for athletes across the State.

The dignitaries appreciated the efforts of the Department and the Engineering Cell in successfully completing the renovation works. The upgraded facilities are expected to greatly benefit athletes and sports enthusiasts by providing improved training and competition infrastructure for the development of table tennis and weightlifting in Sikkim.

The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude to all dignitaries, association members, officers, staff, and stakeholders for their support and participation in making the event a success.

On 4th of June 2026 The XVIIth State Level Athletics Meet 2026 commenced at Khel Gaon, Resh*thang, Gangtok, marking the beginning of the State’s premier athletics championship.

The event was inaugurated by Shri Rinzing Wangyal Chopel, Chairman, Sikkim Sport Development Board, in the presence of Ms Yangchen D. Tamang, Secretary, Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, Shri Tenzing Loden Lepcha, IPS, President, Sikkim Athletic Association, along with officials, coaches, athletes, and sports enthusiasts.

Organized by the Sikkim Athletic Association, the three-day championship brings together athletes from across the State to compete in various track and field events, fostering sportsmanship, discipline, and excellence in athletics.

The Sports & Youth Affairs Department extends its best wishes to all participating athletes and commends the efforts of the Sikkim Athletic Association in promoting athletics and nurturing sporting talent in Sikkim.

Field Visit to Jaslal Pradhan Boxing Academy, Khamdong
The Secretary, Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, along with the PCE, ACE , DE , Chief Coach (Boxing), concerned officers, AE and JE, visited the Jaslal Pradhan Boxing Academy at Khamdong to inspect and review the ongoing developmental works and future plans for the academy.

Field Visit at Gnathang Valley under the Vibrant Village Project

The Secretary, Principal Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer, Additional Chief Engineer, along with departmental officers, conducted a field visit to the picturesque Gnathang Valley on 11th May, 2026.

The visit was undertaken to inspect the proposed sites under the Vibrant Village Programme for:
1. Construction of a Futsal Arena at Thangu,
2. Development of an Ice Hockey Rink at Gnathang Valley, and
3. Development of High Altitude Football Ground and Allied Facilities at Gnathang Valley.

The team interacted with the elected representatives of the area and the local stakeholders and reviewed the proposals and their objectives towards holistic rural development, youth empowerment and promotion of sports and fitness in the remote high altitude areas of the State.

The Vibrant Village Project aims to enhance connectivity, livelihood opportunities, and overall socio-economic development while preserving the unique cultural and natural heritage of the region.

The Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Sikkim, is delighted to share that four talented students from the State Sports Academy (SSA) have been selected to represent Sikkim in the U-20 Swami Vivekananda National Football Championship 2026, scheduled to be held at Narainpur, Chhattisgarh.

This achievement reflects the dedication, discipline, and hard work of our young athletes, coaches, and support staff. Their selection is a matter of immense pride for the entire state and a testament to the growing football culture in Sikkim.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the selected players and wish them the very best as they represent Sikkim on the national stage. May they continue to inspire young sportspersons across the state with their passion and determination.
