Government of Sikkim Issues Advertisement for Appointment of Ombudspersons under MGNREGA in Six Districts

Gangtok, April 5, 2026: The Rural Development Department (RDD), Government of Sikkim, has invited applications for the post of Ombudsperson under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) for six districts — Gangtok, Gyalshing, Soreng, Namchi, Pakyong, and Mangan.

One Ombudsperson will be appointed in each district following an internal assessment. The selected candidates will be responsible for the redressal of grievances, resolution of social audit issues, and disposal of complaints related to the implementation of MGNREGA in their respective districts.

Eligibility Criteria:
• The applicant must be a retired Government Officer not below the rank of Joint Secretary or equivalent, Senior Lawyer, Social Worker, or Academician with experience in Rural Development.
• Minimum age as on 1st April 2026 should be 62 years.
• Must have experience in working with people and communities as well as in implementing developmental programmes.
• Should not be a member of any political party.
• Must be physically active and capable of conducting field tours and inspections in remote rural locations.
• Should be able to handle the simple Ombudsman’s App for online reporting.
Remuneration:
Remuneration will be paid at the rate of Rs. 2,250/- per sitting, with a maximum upper limit of Rs. 45,000/- per month. All necessary support, including TA/DA at the rate admissible to Class I Officers of the State Government, will be provided. A nodal officer from the department will assist the Ombudsperson as and when required.

Tenure and Jurisdiction:
• The tenure of engagement will be 2 years, extendable by not more than two times by 1 year each (maximum 4 years total), based on performance appraisal or till the incumbent attains the age of 68 years, whichever is earlier. There shall be no re-appointment.
• The Ombudsperson will function within the jurisdiction of the assigned district.

The prescribed application format (Annexure-I) can be obtained from the Office of the Special Secretary-cum-Project Director MGNREGA, 4th Floor, RDD Head Office, Gangtok during office hours. It can also be downloaded from the official RDD website: rmdd.sikkim.gov.in.
Filled-in applications must be submitted to rmdd.sikkim.gov.in by email. The last date for submission of applications is 15th April, 2026.
This initiative is aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability, and grievance redressal mechanisms in the implementation of MGNREGA across Sikkim’s rural areas.

State Level Kho-Kho Championship Khelgoan

Gangtok, 4th April 2026(RDD): Mr Arun Kumar Upreti, Minister of Rural Development Department graced the second day of the morning session of the 1st State -Level Kho-Kho Championship 2026, at Khelgaon, Resh*thang as the chief guest, today.

Organised by the Sikkim Kho-Kho Association, the second day drew enthusiastic participation from players representing various districts, schools and colleges from across the State.

Addressing the gathering, Minister, RDD expressed contentment at witnessing the ardent participation of young players describing as a landmark occasion for the State's sporting community. Congratulating the young participants, technical officials, judges and guest present on the occasion he stated the Championship marked a significant moment in Sikkim.

He also expressed appreciation to the Governor of Sikkim and Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang for their continued encouragement towards youth development and sporting activities in the State. He observed that under the present government, increasing attention has been given to creating opportunities and platforms for young people to pursue their interests in various sporting disciplines.

Encouraging the participants, he urged them to continue engaging in the sport of their choice with dedication and sincerity. He emphasised that victory should not be measured only by medals or titles, but also by the courage and determination shown by every participant who steps forward to compete.

The Championship which commenced on April 3, continues to provide a valuable platforms for young athletes to showcase their talent while strengthening Sikkim's sporting culture.

PRESS RELEASE

The Rural Development Department, Government of Sikkim, informs that the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, in collaboration with MY Bharat, has launched a nationwide digital campaign titled “VB-G RAM G Youth Digital Campaign”.

The campaign aims to spread awareness about the “Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rural Employment and Livelihood Mission (Gramin) Act, 2025 (VB-G RAM G Act, 2025)” and to encourage active participation of youth in rural development.

As part of the campaign, youth will be engaged through activities such as quizzes, video challenges and creative competitions.

A national-level short video competition titled “60 Seconds for My Village” has been launched. Youth in the age group of 15 to 29 years can participate by creating a 30 to 60 second video in any Indian language and submitting it online through the MY Bharat portal. Each participant can submit only one entry.

Participants can make videos on themes such as village development, employment generation, livelihood promotion, opportunities for youth and women, and the vision of “My Village, My Future”.

All participants will receive a digital certificate. Outstanding entries will receive certificates and other recognitions and may also get an opportunity to interact with the Union Minister for Rural Development and senior officials.

Entries will be evaluated based on relevance, creativity, originality, technical quality and overall impact.

The selected logo will be used for publicity and promotional activities. The winner will receive a cash prize of ₹50,000. The last date for submission is March 20, 2026.

The Act increases the guarantee of wage employment for rural households from 100 days to 125 days in a financial year and promotes inclusive development and livelihood opportunities.
