DATE:18-07-2022: Nelson Mandela international day

Nelson Mandela has many accolades. He’s  an iconic figure that triumphed over South Africa’s apartheid regime. He was a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, and an international peacemaker. And he was the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa (no biggie). So you see why the United Nations General Assembly would want to celebrate his life. Commemorated on July 18 — Nelson Mandela’s birthday — Nelson Mandela International Day celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world and the ability to make an impact. So, in honor of his 67 years of public service, the Nelson Mandela Foundation

Nelson Mandela International Day, also known as Mandela Day, is an international observance in honor of the revolutionary Nelson Mandela, celebrated annually on his birthday, on July 18. The day was officially set by the United Nations in November 2009, with the first observance of Mandela Day held on July 18, 2010.

DATE:15-07-2022: World youth skills day

Every year on July 15th, World Youth Skills Day encourages youth to acquire certain skills that will help them achieve personal success and fulfillment. The day also raises awareness about the lack of skills that prevent young people from working.

There is a growing concern that youth throughout the world are not able to find employment. There is also concern that youth are not able to receive the proper education or training for their future careers. The number of youth not in employment, education, or training is known as NEET. In recent years, nearly 267 million were classified as NEET. This number is also expected to increase to 273 million in the near future.

To help combat these numbers, the UN and other organizations are placing emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). This type of education prepares people to work as a technician. It also allows employees to take up a skilled craft or trade. TVET takes place at a higher education level and can interact with an apprenticeship program.

Workers around the world have realized some of the many short and long-term benefits that TVET has to offer.

DATE:11-07-2022: world population day

World Population Day on July 11 is a holiday that’s dedicated to focusing on the importance of population issues. The day was established by the United Nations as a result of the massive interest people had in Five Billion Day in 1987. Read on for more information about observing this important holiday

Sure, you might know that there are more than seven billion people on earth right now, but how often do you stop to think about what that really means? Five Billion Day, in 1987, was meant to acknowledge the date on which the world’s population reached an estimated five billion people, which supposedly happened on July 11 of that year (hence the annual date for World Population Day). And look how much the population has increased since then! Population issues cover a lot of territories, from family planning, gender equality, and environmental impacts to human rights concerns.

DATE:07-07-2022: Global forgiveness day

We don’t need to be told that holding on to anger is bad for us — that is why Global Forgiveness Day, celebrated on July 7 each year, is so special to us. Established to increase the goodwill among people, Global Forgiveness Day asks everyone to try and set their differences aside and create a world full of healing and letting go of negativity

Forgiveness — aka the concept of pardoning someone after an offense, letting go of negative emotions, and releasing the hurt — has always been a key principle of every religion around the globe. The teachings from these religions highlight the nature of forgiveness and have provided a basis for the modern traditions and practices used to forgive. While philosophers also studied the concept of forgiveness, the emotion was primarily related to matters of faith.

It was only later, in the 20th century, that forgiveness caught science’s attention. Scientists, educators, and psychologists began studying forgiveness and its impact on human well-being. What they found was that forgiveness was a process. Multiple researchers developed models of forgiveness, like step-by-step approaches that would allow people to improve their ability to forgive. Later studies even attempted to understand the relationship between forgiveness and justice, particularly after particular incidents involving famous acts of forgiveness.

DATE:20-06-2022: World Refugee Day

Each June 20, the globe comes together to honor World Refugee Day. The United Nations General Assembly launched the holiday in 2000, and since then, the worldwide community has spent the day focused on ways to improve the lives of refugees. Most of us know that refugees are forced to leave their homes due to war, terror, or other crises—but fleeing their home country is often just the beginning of a difficult journey. Many refugees find themselves living in camps until they are resettled—some of which are dangerous or not well-equipped for long term living. Refugees don’t always have a say in which country they are ultimately relocated to, and the bureaucratic process involved in finding their new home can take years. Worldwide refugee crises have taken center stage in the news in recent years, so it’s more important than ever to share support and to celebrate World Refugee Day.

DATE:19-06-2022: International day for the elimination of sexual violence conflict

Today, June 19th, marks the seventh International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict since it was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. Six years later, the United States remains steadfast in its commitment to eliminate and prevent the horrors of conflict-related sexual violence around the world. Last week, the United States joined G7 leaders in denouncing the use of sexual violence in conflict situations, where we invited other governments to consider how best to strengthen international architecture around conflict-related sexual violence and condemn the ongoing widespread sexual violence in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

The United States is pioneering new efforts to prevent and respond to all forms of gender-based violence, including conflict-related sexual violence. On International Women’s Day, President Biden called for the first-ever U.S. National Action Plan on Gender-Based Violence and a revitalized and updated Global Strategy on Gender-Based Violence. The advancement of new efforts to address conflict-related sexual violence will be a priority.

DATE:15-06-2022: World elder abuse awareness day

Help spread the word for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. It can be hard to imagine that anyone would deliberately want to harm an elderly person, but unfortunately, elder abuse is a widespread problem. Some instances of elder abuse are intended to exploit the person financially; you’ve probably heard of scams targeting seniors. In other cases, it’s simple negligence: Caregivers don’t provide the basic necessities, like nutritious food, appropriate medication, safety, or assistance with hygiene. If you see something, say something.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, or WEAAD, is an annual initiative launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the World Health Organization. In its 66/127 resolution, the United Nations General Assembly designated that date as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, a day in which the entire world voices its opposition to any form of abuse of the older generation.

DATE:12-06-2022: The World Day Against Child labour

The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child labour and the action and efforts needed to eliminate it. Each year on 12 June, the World Day brings together governments, employers and workers organizations, civil society, as well as millions of people from around the world to highlight the plight of child labourers and what can be done to help them.

Not all work done by children should be classified as child labour that is to be targeted for elimination. Children’s or adolescents’ participation in work that does not affect their health and personal development or interfere with their schooling, is generally regarded as being something positive. This includes activities such as helping their parents around the home, assisting in a family business or earning pocket money outside school hours and during school holidays. These kinds of activities contribute to children’s development and to the welfare of their families; they provide them with skills and experience, and help to prepare them to be productive members of society during their adult life.

Greetings from fellow Rotaractors💫
DATE:08-06-2022: World Brain tumor day

Every year on June 8th, World Brain Tumor Day raises awareness and educates people about brain tumors. The day also pays tribute to those affected by brain tumors.

In the United States, over 700,000 people live with brain tumors. In just one year, 84,000 people in the country will be diagnosed with a brain tumor. Brain tumors are either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous.) A malignant tumor is sometimes referred to as brain cancer. This type of cancer falls into the same category as central nervous system cancers. On a global scale, 330,000 children and adults worldwide were diagnosed with cancer of the central nervous system in one year. This number continues to rise along with the mortality rate for brain cancer.

Because of the high mortality rate of brain cancer, it is vital to understand the symptoms. As with most cancers, early detection is key. The earlier a brain tumor is detected, the easier it is to treat. Common symptoms associated with a brain tumor include recurrent headaches, seizures, vision problems, memory loss, and paralysis of certain body parts. Doctors easily detect brain tumors with certain diagnostic tests, such as a CT scan or MRI.

DATE:08-06-2022: World Ocean Day

The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on earth.

The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, it is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world. Not to mention, the ocean is key to our economy with an estimated 40 million people being employed by ocean-based industries by 2030.

Even though all its benefits, the ocean is now in need of support.

With 90% of big fish populations depleted, and 50% of coral reefs destroyed, we are taking more from the ocean than can be replenished. We need to work together to create a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its bounty but instead restores its vibrancy and brings it new life.

DATE:05-06-2022: World Environment Day

World Environment Day urges all of us to protect our natural surroundings. The stunning facts? An estimated 7 million people die each year from causes related to air pollution, with a majority occurring in the Asia-Pacific region. This day, which falls on June 5, encourages worldwide activism. That means everything from littering to climate change. World Environment Day is both a global celebration and a platform for public outreach.

China, which now owns half the world’s electric vehicles and 99 percent of the world’s electric buses, hosted the 2019 event. “The country has demonstrated tremendous leadership in tackling air pollution domestically,” said Acting Head of UN Environment Joyce Msuya. “It can now help spur the world to greater action.” The UN first established World Environment Day in 1972.
