A heated debate erupted in the Assam Assembly after Congress MLA Baby Begum suggested that a woman suffering from prolonged illness should permit her husband to marry again. Responding sharply, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma rejected the idea, calling marriage in Hindu society a “divine relationship” and saying a husband’s responsibility is to care for and treat his wife, not seek remarriage.

Sarma described the suggestion as “cruelty” towards women and questioned how such an idea could be morally acceptable, saying it would cause severe mental distress to women.

ধুবুৰীত পশু চিকিৎসালয়ৰ নামত ৰাজ্য চৰকাৰে এক প্ৰহসন বা নামমাত্ৰ পশু চিকিৎসালয় খুলি থৈছে। য’ত কোনো ডাক্তৰ সঠিকভাৱে নবহে, কোনো চিকিৎসাও নহয়, আৰু কোনো পশুকে চিকিৎসাৰ জৰিয়তে বচাব পৰা নাযায়। গতিকে, ৰাজ্য চৰকাৰক অতি বিনম্ৰতাৰে অনুৰোধ জনাইছোঁ যাতে বিষয়টো তৎক্ষণাত তদন্ত কৰি চায়।

The state Government overnment has opened a veterinary hospital in Dhubri that is nothing more than a farce or a hospital in name only. No doctors attend regularly, no proper treatment is provided, and it is impossible to save any animal through their care. Therefore, we humbly request the state Government to immediately look into this matter.

ধুবুরীতে পশু হাসপাতালের নামে একটি প্রহসন বা নামমাত্র পশু হাসপাতাল রাজ্য সরকার খুলে রেখেছে। যেখানে না কোনো ডাক্তার ঠিকভাবে বসেন, না কোনো চিকিৎসা হয়, আর না কোনো পশুকে চিকিৎসার মাধ্যমে বাঁচানো সম্ভব হয়। অতএব, রাজ্য সরকারের কাছে বিনীতভাবে অনুরোধ জানাচ্ছি অবিলম্বে বিষয়টি খতিয়ে দেখার জন্য।
