Dev Kumar Verma was born to a paan shop owner and coal labourer in the village of Katras in the Dhanbad district of Jharkhand (then undivided Bihar). Growing up, he saw his village, which was full of either part-time shop owners or coal labourer grappling with alcohol addiction. Education was not a priority, neither on the minds of the labourer nor their growing children. For them who wanted to do

something money was the biggest challenge. Dev had a different dream and he started working towards it. During his school days, he started providing tuitions to students to cater his education fees. Later, he was got selected to N.I.T., Durgapur. Why I am begging all the time ??

No, we are not begging for sympathy — we are seeking support for education.

Many people, even from my own circle, have said things like,
“Why ask for donations publicly? It looks like begging.”

And honestly, I am at peace with that.
Because if "begging" helps a child from a slum and coal mines get educated,
I’ll proudly do it — every single day.

When we started Pathshala Educational Trust eleven years ago, it wasn’t a grand plan.
It began teaching children from labour families in small community batches.
We had no big funds, no donors — just our own savings and a simple vision:
“Education must not stop, no matter what.”

Soon, what started with 50 children became a movement of thousands from nearby slum areas who wanted to learn.
And when funds ran short, we didn’t quit — we reached out to friends, families, and strangers.
Some called it begging; we call it believing.

We borrowed when needed, appealed when required —
but we never stopped teaching.

Even today, hundreds of children wait outside our learning centres — not for food,
but for knowledge that nourishes their future.

Because we come from India, where we believe in Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam —
the world is one family.
And in this family, no child should be left uneducated.

If you ever wonder why we ask for support so passionately,
remember — we are not asking for ourselves.
We are asking for the dreams of children who still believe education can change their lives.

We are currently short by ₹2 lakhs to continue our month’s education programs,
but with your help, we are confident these classrooms will stay open, bright, and full of hope.

Your support keeps a child’s dream alive.
Join us in building a classroom for every child who deserves a chance.

Now Empowering Learners Aged 15 to 85

We are thrilled to announce a landmark development in our journey at Pathshala Educational Trust. What began as a mission to educate children under 15 has now evolved into a broader, more inclusive movement.

With the gracious approval of the MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA, Pathshala is now officially permitted to conduct classes for learners aged 15 to 85 years under the visionary Mission ULLAS – New India Literacy Program.

On 21st September 2025, we successfully conducted our first literacy exam under this initiative, marking a new era of lifelong learning and inclusive education.

This milestone reaffirms our belief that education is not bound by age—it is a right, a tool for empowerment, and a pathway to dignity.

Mission ULLAS aligns perfectly with our core values: reaching the unreached, uplifting communities, and transforming lives through knowledge. Whether it's a teenager seeking foundational skills or a senior citizen embracing literacy for the first time, Pathshala is now a home for every learner.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India (GoI) for this recognition and support. This is not just an expansion of our age bracket—it’s an expansion of hope, opportunity, and impact.

Let’s continue building a literate, equitable, and empowered India—one learner at a time.
