Forest-PLUS

Forest-PLUS Forest-PLUS is a technical assistance program of USAID India & India's MoEFCC. For more information,

The Partnership for Land Use Science (Forest-PLUS) is a five-year USAID-funded program to help India achieve low carbon economic growth by developing, field-testing, and institutionalizing innovative tools, techniques, and methods to yield benefits in climate change mitigation, biodiversity protection, environmental services, and livelihoods from India’s forested landscapes. In achieving these goa

ls, Forest-PLUS will help create an environment in India enabling REDD+ to reach meaningful scale and impact. Forest-PLUS has established demonstration landscapes in Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Sikkim, representing four important and distinctive forest types where it tests in practice the effectiveness and appropriateness of its approach and associated technologies, tools, and methods. These field tests inform an iterative improvement of Forest-PLUS design and activities. Forest-PLUS implementation is closely coordinated with the Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change (MoEFCC), with State Forest Departments, and with a variety of other stakeholder organizations. Forest-PLUS just completed a successful technical exchange visit on measures for improved forest management in India. We were fortunate to have great community support from the women of Doi and the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department for the officers from the USFS, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Sikkim Forest Departments who participated. Thanks also to the former USAID staff & project implementers, SUNY ESF, and the Forest-PLUS team for your thoughtful participation and help.

Wood is Good
The promotion of use of wood obtained from sustainably managed trees and forests can play a positive role in mitigating climate change through sequestration of carbon and creating a pool of long-life products (such as door frames and windows) that delay its release back into the atmosphere. Research has shown that wood-framed buildings are more environment-friendly than concrete- and steel-framed buildings.
