On 19 January, Scholars from the Institute of Public Health attended a Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Awareness Camp at H.D. Kote district, Karnataka, organised in collaboration with JSS Medical College and the Karnataka State Tribal Research Institute (KSTRI). The programme was supported by experts including Dr. Deepa Bhat, Dr. Pooja Aggarwal, and Dr. Manashri Bhuyar.

Dr. Deepa Bhat, invited as a resource person, shared key guidelines on SCD screening strategies and Point-of-Care (PoC) diagnostics, while addressing critical public health and social dimensions of the disease. Discussions focused on reducing stigma and misconceptions, the necessity of HPLC-based confirmatory diagnosis for disability certification and access to government benefits, and the pivotal role of ASHA workers in early ANC registration, follow-up, and community-level screening.

The session also highlighted how such outreach activities align with the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM), including their funding mechanisms and long-term objectives. During the camp, LFA kit–based PoC screening was conducted to classify individuals as healthy, carriers, or affected based on visual strip patterns. Detailed proformas and pedigree charts were used to document clinical history, family inheritance patterns, and identify at-risk relatives for further screening and follow-up, reinforcing a comprehensive, community-centric approach to SCD care.
