The Samavesh community is devoted to creating inclusive and meaningful discourses that range from policy and development challenges to narratives of public interest. The belief is that these discourses are essential for a democracy to sustain and thrive; therefore, a space has been created where rational lessons can take place. (https://samavesh.org.in/)

The India Smart Cities Fellowship Program (ISCFP) and the Samavesh community are organizing their first-ever ISCFP-Samavesh Summit 2022 on October 18th, 2022 to initiate inclusive conversations amongst policy and development enthusiasts. Stay tuned for more updates.

"A city's small abundant spaces have a key impact on quality of life." - William Whyte.

Indian cities have underutilised spaces like neighbourhood parks, the land beneath flyovers, dump sites, and back lanes, which require transformation as they negatively impact the community's safety, health, and economy.

Due to Indore's high community participation rate, the city has made rapid strides in placemaking initiatives- both placemaking marathons and nurturing neighbourhood challenge- making Indore the ideal city for piloting the project.

Using Indore Smart City's official 311 app as its foundation, Team Activate (Kaustubh Mirajkar, Ojaswini Bansal, Tarini Gupta and Vasudha Sharma) is adding their plug-in, Activate Public Spaces, to the same. The addition will streamline the process of carrying out placemaking initiatives while encouraging the communities to participate in identifying underutilized spaces, sharing their ideas and support for the transformation. The support feature will redirect the users to the Indore Smart Cities CSR webpage.

The event was attended by 40+ students from Sagar Institute of Science, Technology and Research Centre, Ratibad Campus, Bhopal. The workshop was intended to strengthen youth understanding and raise awareness of solid waste management and the importance of waste management practices in a fun and engaging way. The workshop also had a quiz competition called "Kachron Ke Khiladi", with four contests-a quiz, an audio-visual round, a drawise, and a debate round. It was heartwarming to see the enthusiasm and sportsmanship with which the students participated and came up with promising ideas to eliminate garbage spots in the city. The winning teams were felicitated.

Team BIOME (Divya Chand, Harsha Arya, Oviya and Upama Ghosh) is working on a digital platform, an attempt to apply the knowledge of ecosystem services offered by natural resources in the practical realm of urban development. Urban water bodies in Indian cities provide many ecosystem services that directly and indirectly benefit the well-being of the city’s residents. However, due to haphazard urbanization, urban water bodies undergo crucial issues such as encroachment, urban flooding, and eventual loss of water level. The city’s endeavors toward urban resilience would lead to building sustainable cities. Their initiative highlights the inclusion of the general public in the collection or generation of data, interpretation, and dissemination of outcomes for the protection and restoration of freshwater bodies. It encourages the practice of citizen science for the sustainable development of water bodies. It will provide a platform for the citizens to develop an intense knowledge of the water bodies in their cities and the government’s interventions around them for their conservation. It will also aid the city administrators in decision-making concerning future project planning and policy appraisals concerning the urban water bodies.
