The Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is a flagship scheme aimed at promoting sustainable fisheries development. Under the scheme, the Central and State Governments have approved fisheries and aquaculture projects in Andhra Pradesh worth over ₹2405 crore (approx), aimed at strengthening infrastructure and supporting local fishers and aquaculture farmers.

“Off the coast of Mangrol in Gujarat’s Junagadh district, fishermen have recorded one of the biggest Yellowfin Tuna catches of the season. Nearly 100 nautical miles into the Arabian Sea, two deep-sea trawlers — Mahi Sagar 10​ IND GJ 11 ds 4117 and Shree Ganesh 9 ​ ​IND GJ 11 DS 4116 — returned with an impressive haul of around 12 tonnes of Yellowfin Tuna.

Each vessel carried a crew of 10 fishermen who spent days navigating deep waters within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone. The tuna, weighing between 60 and 90 kilograms each, marked a rewarding end to the fishing season for the crews.

The catch highlights both the skill and endurance of Gujarat’s deep-sea fishermen and the growing potential of India’s marine fisheries sector.”

India’s seafood export story goes beyond shrimp, with strong performance across multiple marine product categories in FY 2025–26. From frozen fish and squid to dried seafood and cuttlefish, India’s marine basket continued to diversify and expand its global reach.

Mapping of Seafood Export Potential from Inland States/UTs

Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi, Secretary, Department of Fisheries, Government of India chaired a meeting on Mapping of Seafood Export Potential from Inland States/UTs.

The meeting was attended by senior officers from fisheries department of states/UTs, representatives from MPEDA, NFDB, EIC, ICAR and subordinate field offices.

During the meeting, Dr. Likhi highlighted the need to identify the gaps across the fisheries value chain and undertake targeted interventions to enhance seafood exports from inland States.

Union Secretary, Fisheries also emphasised the need for close coordination among MPEDA, NFDB, EIC, States and UTs to unlock the export potential of inland fisheries as nearly 72% of India’s total fish production comes from inland States/UTs, whereas the contribution to seafood exports is only about 1% (Excluding Shrimp).
