Sri Lanka Mission in Chennai is one of the older Missions dating back to 1957 and is also the Mission closest to Sri Lanka in geographical terms. The Office of the Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Chennai was established in 1957, as the Passport and Information Office, under the supervision of the Sri Lanka High Commission in New Delhi. Since then, it has been elevated to the status of an Office of Assistant High Commissioner in 1959, and subsequently to that of Deputy High Commissioner in 1966. The Madras Mission plays an increasingly important role with respect to the Southern Indian States. It has responsibilities for the southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala and the Union Territory of Pondicherry. The importance of the Mission is based on its geographical proximity to Sri Lanka, as well as its ethnic commonality with the island. This has brought about a special affinity between the people of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. Close family relationships also exist with many residents of Tamil Nadu with Sri Lankans.

The meeting focused on Mr. Obeli Krishna’s upcoming film project, with a productive exchange of views on potential collaboration and the way forward.

Dr. Ganesanathan Geathiswaran, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Southern India, participated in a business interaction with members of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII, Puducherry, on 31 August 2026, in Puducherry. He was accompanied by Mr. Pasan Kavikeshawa, Second Secretary, Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission, Chennai.
The interaction provided an opportunity to highlight the business, trade and investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka and to exchange views on strengthening economic engagement and business partnerships between Sri Lanka and India.
In his Special Address, the Deputy High Commissioner outlined areas of mutual interest and encouraged greater engagement between the business communities of Sri Lanka and India, with a view to further enhancing bilateral trade, investment and economic cooperation.
The programme was hosted by Mr. M. Nadarajan, Chairman, CII Puducherry State Council, with the participation of CII members and business representatives.

Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Chennai, Dr. Ganesanathan Geathiswaran, accompanied by Mr. Pasan Kavikeshawa, Second Secretary participated in AHPICON 2026, the 3rd Edition of the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI-TN), held on 29 August 2026 at Feathers - A Radha Hotel, Chennai.

The Deputy High Commissioner participated as a panelist in the session on "Medical Tourism", addressing the topic "India's Medical Tourism Opportunity: How Tamil Nadu Can Lead."

The conference brought together leading hospital promoters owners,
clinicians, healthcare
dministrators, policymakers and industry representatives to deliberate on emerging
opportunities and challenges in the healthcare sector.

During the session, Dr. Geathiswaran highlighted the potential for strengthening India-Sri Lanka cooperation in healthcare and medical tourism, including opportunities for greater collaboration, knowledge exchange and people-to-people connectivity in the healthcare sector.

He also noted the growing interest among several healthcare institutions in Tamil Nadu to explore opportunities for establishing healthcare facilities and expanding their presence in Sri Lanka.

The discussions highlighted the significant potential for healthcare investment, hospital partnerships and medical tourism between Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu, contributing to stronger bilateral economic and people-to-people ties.

call on Shri. Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Hon. Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 28 August
2026.
During the meeting, discussions focused on further strengthening the longstanding relations
between Sri Lanka and the State of Andhra Pradesh, with particular emphasis on tourism,
trade and investment, pilgrimage tourism and industrial cooperation.
The Deputy High Commissioner highlighted the potential for enhancing trade and investment
cooperation, particularly by encouraging greater engagement between business communities
and exploring new avenues for economic collaboration.
The Hon. Chief Minister invited more Sri Lankan garment and apparel companies, to
establish and expand their operations in Andhra Pradesh, highlighting the State’s potential as
a destination for investment in the garment and textile sector.
The discussions also highlighted opportunities to further strengthen pilgrimage and cultural
tourism, contributing to enhanced people-to-people contacts and closer cultural ties between

Mr. Pasan Kavikeshawa, Third Secretary of Deputy High Commission of Sri Lanka in
Chennai participated as a Special Guest at the “Bond and Ride – India & Sri Lanka,”
friendship cycling event organised by Team Bison, led by Mr. Ganesh Kannan, on 26 August
2026.
The initiative, expressed by Dr. Ganesanathan Geathiswaran, Deputy High Commissioner of
Sri Lanka in Chennai aimed at celebrate the enduring bonds of friendship and people-to-
people connections between India and Sri Lanka.
The 20-kilometre friendship ride, flagged off from Besant Nagar Beach, brought together
three distinguished retired Sri Lankan Army officers and passionate long-distance cyclists
Major General Mr. Sumith Balasooriya, Major General Mr. Sumith Premalal and Colonel Mr.
Pradeep Perera along with around 30 Indian cyclists.
The cyclists rode through Santhome, Marina Beach and Anna Salai, concluding at Hotel
Geetham, Mount Road, carrying the Indian and Sri Lankan flags as symbols of friendship,
unity and mutual respect between the two countries.
The three Sri Lankan Army veterans have undertaken a challenging
Colombo–Chennai–Colombo cycling journey, covering approximately 1,400 km, as part of
an initiative promoting friendship between the two countries.
During the event, Mr. Pasan Kavikeshawa felicitated the visiting Sri Lankan Army veteran
cyclists and distributed commemorative mementos and participation certificates to the
cyclists.
The event also promoted the messages “Cycle for Health” and “Say No to Drugs”,
highlighting the importance of healthy living and responsible lifestyles.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy High Commissioner commended the young artistes, Bhavya and Lahari, on this significant milestone in their artistic journey and acknowledged the dedication, discipline and perseverance reflected in their Arangetram.
He highlighted the enduring historical, cultural and people-to-people ties between Sri Lanka and India, noting that cultural and artistic engagements serve as an important bridge in fostering friendship, mutual understanding and closer relations between the two countries.

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay, hoisted the National Flag, followed by a ceremonial parade and salute by the tri-services and the police.
