I Love Chromepet

I Love Chromepet Chrompet (குரோம்பேட்டை) is a township in the southern part of Chennai, (சென்னை) India. It is 4 km south of the Chennai International Airport, Tirusulam. P. J.

This page is for the people who love chromepet..we will keep sharing the things happening around chromepet..about the new food outlets, shopping places, and many more.. It is a part of the Tambaram (தாம்பரம்) taluk of Kanchipuram (காஞ்சிபுரம்) district and is located 20 kilometres from Chennai city. It lies on the Grand Southern Trunk (GST Road), close to Tambaram and next to Pallavaram (பல்லாவரம்),

Well connected by Road and Railways. It is the home of the famous Madras Institute of Technology, the institute where Dr. A. Abdul Kalam, former president of India and Tamil writer Sujatha studied. The neighbourhood is served by Chrompet railway station of the Chennai Suburban Railway Network. Chromepet is not a Tamil name. Earlier the town was the home of Chrome Leathers so the name chrome and pettai (Tamil: பேட்டை in Tamil means 'a Estate'). This company has been completely demolished and Balaji Hospital has been built in that Place. But, still you can find the traces of Chrome Leathers (its name board) when you walk through the CLC Works road, near the Chrompet Police Station . The area was a part of Thondaimandalam ruled by Thodaimans who were allied with the early Cholas from around the first to the second century AD. Later the area was passed on to the chieftains of the Satavahanas. Chennai, Chengulpet and surrounding area belonged to the Thondai Nadu during the Pallava period (3rd to 7th century AD). The historic period proper begins with the Pallava kings and the earliest of their stone inscriptions is found nearby in Pallavaram (Pallava puram) in a cave temple excavated by Mahendravarman I (AD 600–630).[1] Narasimhavarman I who succeeded Mahendravarman I waged battles against Pulekesin of the Chalukya dynasty and defeated him at Manimangalam which is 11 km (6.8 mi) south-west of Chromepet.

At Chromepet, auto fares are exorbitant even for a short distance. Passengers are reported to be shelling out at least Rs. 50 for a minimum distance.

The general public have requested the transport authorities to introduce share auto facility in the suburbs connecting Pallavaram, Nemilichery-Chromepet, Zameen Royapettah, Chromepet, Lakshmipuram, AGS Colony and other residential localities.

At present, share autos ply up to Hastinapuram from Grand Southern Trunk (G.S.T.) Road. “The Transport Department should introduce share autos at Chromepet for making life easier for passengers. The auto drivers fleece hapless passengers by charging extra for a short distance. Sometimes, they refuse to come for a short distance.

Auto drivers are supposed to use the metres, but they do not operate fare meters and demand exorbitant fares,” passengers said. “Though the government had directed autorickshaw drivers to install fare metres and operate on metre-basis, auto drivers here continue to harass commuters by charging exorbitantly.”

“Auto drivers charge fares without any consideration and there seems to be no rules and regulations for them," said R. Rajesh, a passenger who shelled out Rs. 150 for a short ride in the suburbs. He had paid thrice what have cost him for the ride had the fixed tariff been followed.

“Most of the auto drivers demand ‘return fare’, citing that they are unable to get passengers while returning. Every 10-15 metres, there is an auto-stand on GST Road,” he pointed out. “We have to make both ends meet. We need to pay the daily rent for the auto, bear the maintenance cost of the vehicle, shell out money for repairs and insurance. Apart from this, personal and family expenditure must be taken care of. So, with the present tariff, this is not possible. We will be happy if the tariff rates are increased. The government should take steps to revise the rates,” auto drivers said.
