Gurudwara Shri Hemkund Sahib Ji - Uttarakhand
Located in Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve , Gurdwara Hemkund Sahib is a major pilgrimage site for Sikhs and is situated on the banks of Hemkund Lake.
The place holds religious significance as the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji had interceded here for years.
Before going inside the shrine, Sikhs take a dip in the holy waters of the lake which is located nearby. The water of the lake is very cold, and there are separate chambers for men and women where they take holy dip.
Devotees can also buy small souvenirs from nearby shops. Inside the gurudwara, devotees are given groans along with tea and khichdi, which is prepared using equal parts of sugar, wheat flour and ghee.
Prasad is given to the devotees after the meeting. During the gathering, Sikhs offer prayers and recite the Hukamnama on the top left hand side of the page of the Guru Granth Sahib.
The Gurudwara was built in the year 1960, when Major General Harkirat Singh, Chief Engineer of the Indian Army visited the place. Later, the architect Sally took charge of the construction of the Gurudwara.
