Sarojini Naidu's book 'A Golden Threshold' is a collection of poems that describe the beauty, culture and traditional jobs of India.

Sarojini Naidu was an Indian Freedom Fighter and Poet. She is a role model for women empowerment.

At the time of colonialism when British literature often portrayed Indians as savages, beasts and what not terrible descriptions, Sarojini Naidu owned English and presented the most beautiful, vivid and wonderful image of India.

She gave a lesson on how Indians can use English to bring out the best of our culture and give a reply to the colonisers in their language.

In her book, there are various lessons one can learn from her poems. These are-

1. Don't let your dreams die.

2. Appreciate and respect the traditional jobs of your country. They are as honourable as any other modern profession.

3. Develop a spiritual temperament. This will give you strength to overcome life's sorrows.

4. From her life we learn how one must always remain positive, merry and hopeful. Living in the moment is essential to make the most of life.

5. We must be proud of our culture and heritage. The more confidence we have in our traditions, the more respectfully the world will treat us.

Sarojini Naidu was truly a visionary. Let us ensure we imbibe these lessons from her poetry into our lives.

Leaving you with a poem on India from her book to inspire and ignite you to work for the welfare of Mother India-

TO INDIA

O young through all thy immemorial years!
Rise, Mother, rise, regenerate from thy gloom,
And, like a bride high-mated with the spheres,
Beget new glories from thine ageless womb!

The nations that in fettered darkness weep
Crave thee to lead them where great mornings break . . . .
Mother, O Mother, wherefore dost thou sleep?
Arise and answer for thy children's sake!

Thy Future calls thee with a manifold sound
To crescent honours, splendours, victories vast;
Waken, O slumbering Mother and be crowned,
Who once wert empress of the sovereign Past.

Today let us learn about the dynamic personality of Supreme Court of India's first female judge- Fathima Beevi.

She was the first female Muslim Judge of not only India, but the entire Asian Continent!

Mrs. Beevi's father was inspired by Mrs. Anna Chandy who was the first woman judicial officer working near Travancore. Her achivements and stature impressed him and she motivated him to dream of his own daughter making her mark in the judiciary.

Mrs. Fathima Beevi worked hard and studied diligently. In 1950, she became the first woman to top the Bar Council of India’s exams and was awarded the Bar Council gold medal for 1949–50.

Such was her depth of knowledge in the field of law that the then President of India- Shri Shankar Dayal Sharma called her a valuable asset with the knowledge of Indian Constitution.

Even after retirement she was actively involved in governance and served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission and the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

From her life we learn that-

1. As Parents we must aim higher for our daughters. If we are confident in their talent then external barriers will not stop them from achieving their goals.

2. Women must enter into professions traditionally dominated by men so that they have equal representation in all fields of work.

3. We as women must have basic awareness on our rights and laws on issues like stalking, bullying and harassment.

4. Women must prioritize education because that can open doors one never imagined that exist

5. Women role models must be spoken about to educate and inspire people

As the year comes to an end, a good book which everyone must read once is Ikigai by Hector Garcia and Francesc Miralles.

Ikigai is a Japanese philosophy which means that the purpose of your life is to find something that you love, what you are good at, what can give you income and what the world needs. This will give the reason to your life.

The book gives out 10 things one must do to live a long and meaningful life. They are-

i) Stay active

ii) Take things slow- don't take stress

iii) Be mindful of what you eat

iv) Surround yourself with good friends

v) Get in shape

vi) Smile

vii) Reconnect with nature

viii) Give thanks

ix) Live in the moment

x) Follow your ikigai

These advices are simple to listen but can be hard to follow.

An easier way to approach them can be to adopt 2 habits in a month. In less than 2 months you will definitely see positive changes- physically, mentally, emotionally.

Today let us learn about the prominent Hindi poet and writer- Mahadevi Verma.

Mahadevi Verma was a Hindi-language poet and story writer.Very few people know that she was also a very talented artist.

She is considered one of the four major pillars of the Chhayawadi era in Hindi literature.

Because her writing has been so powerful and yet written in a lucid language understood by the masses, she is also called the 'Modern Meera'.

Poet Nirala had once called her "Saraswati in the vast temple of Hindi Literature".

Mahadevi Verma is a unique writer because she brought into Hindi Language the softer vocabulary and words of Sanskrit and Bengali- something that hadn't been done before.

Apart from poetry she worked widely for social causes and welfare of women. She took up these topics in her writing which influenced not only the readers but also the critics.

It is important that we know about the lives of our famous Indian writers. A holistic understanding of people who contributed to our literature is important to appreciate the culture and be well aware citizens.

A great book which everyone must read once in their lives is Wings of Fire by India's former President- Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

The book talks about the life of Dr. Kalam and how he overcame challenges with courage, wisdom and a never giving up attitude.

At times life leads us into situations we had never imagined to happen. The book gives lessons on how to overcome them and look out for opportunities in times of setbacks.

An incident which he shares is that he always wanted to be a Pilot for the Indian Airforce. There was a vacancy for 10 pilots and out of the 11 candidates interviewed, only he was not selected.

He did not let that setback dishearten him. Dr. Kalam worked hard and led India's space and missile programs.

Later when he became the President of India, he was the Commander in Chief of Indian Armed Forces- which includes Indian Airforce!

Had he been selected in the Airforce back then in past, he could have never got to become the President of India and Commander of Airforce.

So one must never feel dejected, sad and demotivated after encountering a failure, because failure is the stepping stone to success.

Let us talk about Unity in Diversity but with a different perspective today.

India is a home to hundreds of languages, ethnicities and culture.

Across our borders we have seen what happens if a spirit of tolerance is not cultivated. The Sri Lankan War, Pakistan and Afghanistan's persecution of minorities are examples which show that intolerance destroys the spirit of a nation.

A diverse population is a country's biggest asset. When various cultures come together, we can find various ways to approach a problem and solve it.

Mahatma Gandhi once said, "Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilisation."

As citizens of this nation, it is our duty to live up to the spirit promoted by our freedom fighters and do our part in building the India of their dreams.

Today is Universal Health Coverage Day.

World Health Organization started this as a call to bring together all nations for providing their citizens with affordable, quality health care.

Today is thus an important day to revisit Government of India's most important scheme- Ayushman Bharat which is working to promote this vision for a healthier India.

Important features of Ayushman Bharat-

1. Ayushman Bharat is a scheme with 2 elements- Creation of Wellness Centers and providing health insurance to Indian citizens.

2. Ayushman Bharat is the largest health assurance scheme in the world

3. The scheme provides a health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization.

4. The scheme covers over 10.74 crores poor and vulnerable families (approximately 50 crore beneficiaries) that form the bottom 40% of the Indian population.

5. It covers up to 3 days of pre-hospitalization and 15 days post-hospitalization expenses such as diagnostics and medicines.

There is no restriction on the family size, age or gender.

Let us take this day as a reminder to educate our loved ones on the importance of health and making the best use of government schemes for not only our welfare but for the welfare of all.

One of the biggest social evils affecting the society is corruption.

9 December is an important date as it marks the Anti Corruption Day as declared by the United Nations

Every year the world loses 1 trillion USD in bribes. Imagine how many global problems such as climate change, poverty and migrant displacement could be solved if this large amount of money was put in the right direction.

One of the most famous Indians who stood against Corruption in India is Shri Anna Hazare who led the Anti Corruption movement movement in India.

Another famous Indian who stood up against Corruption is Mr. Ashok Khemka. A senior IAS officer, Mr. Khemka has exposed illegal land deals.

These people inspire us to stand up against these social evils and do our part in making the world a more equitable and just place to live.

This Wednesday let us learn about the life of Malwa's Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. Ahilyabai Holkar is not only India but also one of the world's most famous queens.

She is an example of how women-led leadership can bring transformative changes.

Her father was a man ahead of his times. He educated Ahilyabai at home and taught her how to read, write and imparted religious values to her.

When she was married into the royal family, not only did she assist wisely in royal decisions but provided clarity of vision in her leadership.

After taking up the throne on the demise of her husband, she was trained in civil and military affairs. Combining that with her high sense of emotional intelligence, sharp justice- she was one of the most formidable enemies for the British when they invaded India.

She gave importance to social service and giving back to the community. Hence she ordered for reconstruction of hundreds of Hindu holy pilgrimage sites.

Her policies made Malwa one of the most prosperous and progressive kingdoms of the Indian subcontinent.

Today, her stature has risen from being a queen to a divine entity.
Ahilyabai Holkar shows how confident women when equipped with right skills can change the society.

Former Prime Minister of India- Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee set new leadership standards from which modern India and the world can learn much.

Here are 5 key leadership lessons from him-

1. Never indulge in self praise
Vajpayee Ji was an example that a leader must always remain humble.

2. Understand others and their capabilities
Team work produces dream work. He understood that by making The best use of each individual's unique talent and pooling it together, we can get great results in our actions.

3. A great leader should produce more leaders like them.
This idea was famously propounded in his poetry line- Main rahoon ya na rahoon ye desh rehna chahiye.

4. A leader should be emotionally intelligent
A good leader understands the emotions of people around him and acts accordingly.

5. One should remain calm and composed at all times.
A leader never lets the stress of their position show on his face. He/She must remain confident to instill trust and faith into people.

Smt. Meira Kumar's life offers various insights on how women must not be afraid to step into careers which have been traditionally dominated by men.

When women do so, they can bring transformative changes.

Smt. Meira Kumar was India's first female speaker of the Lok Sabha. She is also a prominent politician and has served in the Indian Foreign Service as a diplomat.

In her youth she worked as a social worker and participated in movements related to human rights, social reform and democracy.

When women are given leadership positions, they come up with unique and novel ideas.

As the Speaker of Lok Sabha, she introduced tablets in the parliament to reduce paper wastage. This resulted in 30 percent paper reduction in the Lok Sabha.

In another incident during the 1967 Bihar Famine, she was made the chairperson of National Drought Relief Commission. She launched the unique concept of 'adopt a family' wherein drought affected families were provided support from volunteers.

She is an example of why we need women in leadership roles to take the country forward.
