Plate Mill and URM Lead BSP’s Record-Breaking Growth with Historic Production Milestones in past month
The Plate Mill and Universal Rail Mill (URM) of SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) have scripted a remarkable chapter in the plant’s production culture by achieving a series of record-breaking production and dispatch milestones.
Shri Chitta Ranjan Mohapatra, Director In-Charge, BSP, along with Shri A.K. Chakraborty, ED (MM), Shri Pawan Kumar, ED (HR), Shri Rakesh Kumar, ED (Works) and other senior officials, visited the Plate Mill and URM to congratulate the respective department collectives for their outstanding performance and expressed confidence that both departments would continue to set new benchmarks in the future.
The Universal Rail Mill (URM) achieved its best-ever monthly performance in May 2026, establishing multiple all-time production records and surpassing the mill’s rated prime production capacity. During the month, URM rolled 11,944 blooms (99,983 tonnes), exceeding the previous best of 11,284 blooms. It produced a record 93,397 tonnes of finished rails and 90,594 tonnes of prime rails, surpassing earlier highs of 88,222 tonnes and 85,356 tonnes, respectively.
URM also achieved record production of 5,706 numbers of 260-metre welded rail panels, 9,755 numbers of 130-metre rails, and 5,550 inspected panels, surpassing all previous benchmarks and making May 2026 the most successful month in the mill’s history.
Meanwhile, in May 2026, the Plate Mill achieved 135,847 tonnes rolled production, 125,102 tonnes finished production, 114,076 tonnes total dispatch, and 53,836 tonnes direct dispatch. It also created all-time monthly records in HT finished production (47,561 tonnes) and HT dispatch (38,870 tonnes).
Plate Mill maintained an exceptional growth trajectory in the past months, with March 2026 witnessing an all-time high with 146,554 tonnes rolled production, 134,042 tonnes finished production, and 136,020 tonnes total dispatch. The mill also achieved a record 16,368 tonnes of road dispatch, while its annual direct dispatch of 6,37,118 tonnes during FY 2025-26 became the highest ever.
The momentum continued in April 2026, with new monthly records of 129,652 tonnes rolled production, 120,075 tonnes finished production, and 114,290 tonnes total dispatch, along with the best performance in specific heat consumption.
These achievements were accomplished under the focused leadership of Shri Yogesh Shastri, CGM (BRM & URM), and Shri Kartikeya Behera, CGM (Plate Mill) whose emphasis on productivity enhancement, quality improvement, meticulous planning and operational excellence has enabled both mills to reach unprecedented heights.
