పూర్వం భద్రుడు అను భక్తుడు శ్రీ రాముడుకి తపస్సు చేసి, తను ఒక కొండగా మారి తనపై శ్రీ రాముడు వెలసే విధముగా వరము పొందాడు అంటారు. ఆ కొండకు భద్రుడు పేరు మీద భద్రగిరి అని తరువాత కాలంలో ఆ పట్టణానికి భద్రాచలం (భద్ర + అచలం) అని పేరు స్థిరపడింది. దీనినే రామాలయం అని కూడా అంటారు.
